Business Cards are the Best Low Cost Advertising.  Have you ever heard that before?  It's true. However it's true only if you follow the rules. Here are the rules to effectively market yourself with your business cards.

  1. DON'T LEAVE HOME WITHOUT THEM! Just like the old American Express card commercial. It's embarrassing to want to exchange cards and not have one. Put a handful of cards in every jacket, purse, bag, knapsack, gym bag, in your car. Never be anywhere without business cards at hand.
  2. ASK BEFORE GIVING A CARD.  Would you save someone's card that just pushed it into your hand? Ask "Can we exchange cards?", "Can I offer you my card?" There is always room to be polite today.
  3. GIVE A CARD, GET A CARD. If you give a card to someone in business, you should get his/her card too.
  4. FOLLOW UP.Whenever you exchange cards, follow up with a handwritten note. An e-mail is ok, sending a note by mail makes you stand out.
  5. GIVE 2 CARDS. There are 3 things people do with cards they get. Keep, toss, or give away. If they have 2 of your cards you double the odds they will keep one of your cards.
  6. EVERYONE YOU KNOW SHOULD HAVE 10+ CARDS OF YOURS. That means your siblings, your attorney, your parents, your neighbors, your friends (all of them). They should know to give your card to anyone they speak to that mentions purchasing or refinancing real estate.
  7. POST THEM: See a post board in your local super market or deli, post your card
  8. SELF PHOTO: Even though you might think it's tacky, you are your brand, people know you the more they see you and your face the more they remember who you are and what you do. A business card with just a name and logo does not make you stand out from the rest.
  9. AFTER EATING OUT: This is simple, take a pen and write  THANK YOU :-) on the card and leave it with your paid bill after a meal at a restaurant. Hey you never know if that Peron or someone they know is looking for a home?
  10. AFTER MAKING THE SALE: You just closed a deal, send them a thank you card and enclose a hand written note asking for referrals and include 5 or so business cards. If you did a great job you may get some fast referrals while you are fresh in that persons mind. They are excited to have just bought a home and want to spread the word.

Hi Leo -- Great advice.  I thought I was the only one who left a card with his bill.  I also leave a card at the dry cleaners and in library books.  Aloha

How about posting cards on gas pumps? I've done it many times with my magnetized back. Someone pumps gas, they see your face all day long. Granted the gas station owner wont be too happy with you... but hey... gas is expensive.. you may as well get return on your gallons!
