Goin' to Kansas City, Kansas City Here I come...

Surely you’ve heard that infamous song that’s been sung by a variety of artists… “Goin’ to Kansas City, Kansas City here I come…. They’ve got some crazy little women there, and I’m gonna get me one…”

Well I’m one of those Crazy Little Women who’s crazy about Real Estate and Kansas City.

My hometown, Kansas City, has been called many things…we are called The Heart of America because of our location.  My favorite would be The City of Fountains and my least favorite would be Cowtown.

Kansas City is called the City of Fountains because it is the home of more fountains than any city in the world, except Rome.

The majority of our famous fountains are found on the Country Club Plaza.  The streets of that area decorated with artwork from around the world and the fountains there are the city’s most popular and decorative. For more information on the fountains visit this link http://www.experiencekc.com/fountains.html or this link http://www.360kc.com/Attractions/KansasCityFountains.html

Kansas City is famous for many things… the favorites being BBQ, JAZZ and the Plaza Lighting Ceremony that happens every Thanksgiving evening when the Plaza area is lit with over 80 miles of holiday lights.

BBQ:  As the link below describes, “When it comes to lip-smackin', finger-lickin', chin-dribblin', literally rib-stickin' barbecue, Kansas City holds its own.

http://www.experiencekc.com/barbeque.html

There are numerous wonderful bbq restaurants in Kansas City and one of the first place visitors go when they visit here!

JAZZ:  Kansas City is home to the American Jazz Museum, the premier jazz museum in the United States: http://www.americanjazzmuseum.org/?page=showcontent&content_id=14&action=display

As Ken Burns describes Kansas City in his documentary, Jazz, A Film by Ken Burns: Kansas City, Missouri, was an economic oasis in the heart of the country, a mecca for migrants from the South and musicians in search of work.  http://www.pbs.org/jazz/places/places_kansas_city.htm

PLAZA LIGHTING CEREMONY:  As this website describes: “The most magical time of the year, Holidays on the Plaza http://www.countryclubplaza.com/plaza.aspx?pgID=915 When the intricate Spanish style buildings are lit up with the glitter of 80 miles of eye candy.

Kansas City is certainly a great place to experience….

One cannot write a page on Kansas City without mentioning one of   Kansas City’s greatest…Buck O’Neil.  Buck left us October 6, 2006 but will be with us in our hearts forever. http://www.nlbpa.com/6oct2006.html

I had the wonderful opportunity to meet this man when Ken Burns did the documentary on Baseball.

What a joy and a pleasure to be in his presence.  Buck dedicated his retired years to the Negro League Baseball Museum here in Kansas City.

As a tribute a fundraising drive entitled “Thanks a Million Buck,” has been initiated to build a Buck O’Neil Education and Research Center.

Nice overall coverage of Kansas City. You tell it like it is except that it is the home of over a million friendly people and one old grouch. I've never met him.

As far as jazz in KC is concerned, KC has many jazz and blues clubs plus several wonderful concert venues. You could stay busy listening to live jazz most every night of the year and it would all be world class.

KC has more jazz & blues support organizations than any other city in the world. Start with the 400+ member KC Jazz Ambassadors, then the KC Blues Society, the CODA Jazz Fund, the UMKC Friends of Jazz, and the Elder Statesmen of Kansas City jazz.

KC is where jazz and blues met. That resulted in the development of a sound is jazz unique to jazz and that sound is recognized as a major milestone in the development of jazz.

Nice blog!!

I have a new granddaughter in Shawnee who now takes up a lot of my KC time.  I don't know where I'm happiest, standing in the crossway looking at the fountains or fast dancing with my other grandchildren to street music in the river market or taking in the lost ship museum down there.  I just can't decide!  Then, there are our favorite ice cream haunts!
