Maybe Your Week Needs A European Vacation In It

By

GreeceI have a friend that does some investment banking in Eastern Europe and he told me how he was fond of sailing around the Greek Isles. It is an entirely different lifestyle over there. I got to thinking

Maybe Your Week Needs A European Vacation In It.

The litereal one wouldn't hurt either but I am talking about some mini planned breaks in a tough work week. Europeans often chastise Americans as not being able to stand still. We are always doing. We have Outlook Calendars on our computers with To Do lists.

Do you know in the Greek Isles sometimes you can't even get around in a motorized vehicle?

In fact in some places they are outlawed. You walk, you hire a water taxi, you can hire a donkey and its handler. This actually makes the islands blissfully quiet. Instead you'll hear roosters or again that complaining bleat of a donkey tired from being pushed around. The colors of the navy blue seawater can be soothing, and then there is endless number of cats at your feet begging while you are eating or waiting up to three hours for the water taxi to arrive on the dock just to go one way. You do have scenic hillsides, barren and rocky and also scrubby bushes, pine, olive trees, and fragrant flowers.

The point of the story is not let's all escape to the Greek Isles, although as a vacation probably anytime that would be a pleasant thought. The point is break up your week AWAY from work. Away from the usual. Do something different by yourself, or with those people you enjoy being with, but nonetheless, take yourself on a European vacation in your local city. You can do it, you just have to come up with something you haven't done in awhile. What about a quiet walk in some unknown never before visited park in the morning? Meditation in a holy place of your choosing at off times? It can be a quiet or an ACTIVE shake up with heavy exercise too. Horseback riding, motorboating, just something to get completely off your hamster wheel treadmill that drones on day after day.

We all need refreshment to keep our minds and soul in good sound shape.

Next time you are stuck, think to yourself, it is time for my European vacation, and go somewhere locally with your Greek Isles in mind.

Hi Gary, I love that photo and I'm ready. I want to go there and take that picture. I have never been to the Greek Isles, ( on my bucket list ) but I certainly love the romantic feel depicted by them. I might even go topless. :-)  I watched Mamma Mia for the umpteenth time and would have loved to live that exact experience. The music is POSITIVELY wonderful.

Gary, that sounds wonderful! I'm not letting my wife read this post. She would want to leave tomorrow! I agree, however! Small breaks, maybe going to hit a bucket of balls or even run across town to put up a sign, can be a nice break from the desk position.

Thanks for another nice post!

Forget the everyday breaks.  I'm thinking I want to save for the Greek islands now.  Their way of life sounds delightful.

Ahhhhhhhh Greece is breathtaking!  The food, the people, the place - everything about it was wonderful!  I could live there for a period of time - easily!

Hi Gary... I have been to the Greek Isles and I certainly did not see a bunch of people with iPhones and Blackberry's attached to their hands like we do here.  Just sayin'!  :)

We went to those islands and Greece.  I am now longing to go again.  What a wonderful time we had.  That was too long ago back in 2000.  I earned the trip through my other business and it was pure luxury and pleasure, no work, just delightful.  Love it there.  Those white homes and the blue sea or it was wonderful.  I am just enjoying thinking about it.

Recharging the batteries with small getaways are always good.  I wish you hadn't posted that picture here though now I'll have to get there.  Boy, that looks beautiful.  Packing lightly for sure with no phone or computer!

Gary---You are absolutely right.  Sometimes it is just too hard to block out a chunk of time to go to a faraway place.  There are many opportunities for relaxation and enjoyment right in our own back yards.  It is a matter of getting up from the computer and maybe even turning off our cell phones.

Could not agree with you more. I've learned to visit the Lake Michigan beaches that are "right outside my door" here. They provide the quiet I need every once in awhile to help put things back in perspective and see things a little more clearly.

A nice Greek Restaurant might fit the bill :) Although I've never been to Greece and am dying to go.  Croatia has a city like that - called Dubrovnik - its all walled - and no motor vehicles allowed within those walls!
