Election Too Close to Call in Maryland

By

voteFour races in Anne Arundel County were too close to call in the Maryland primary election, held Tuesday.  One of these is for State Delegate representing District 33A, including Crofton, where only 140 votes separate three candidates.

According to the Annapolis Capitol, incumbent Cathy Vitale is the winner for one of the two State Delegate slots representing the district, but the other delegate won't be decided until absentee and provisional ballots are counted.  Businessman Sid Saab has 2,932 votes, school board member Vic Bernson has 2.976, and incumbent Tony McConkey has 3,072 votes.

"Some numbers are going to go up, some will go down," said the director of Anne Arundel County's Board of Election, regarding absentee and provisional ballots. "They are very important in a close race."

Other elections still pending are the Democratic primary for County Council District 6 and the Republican primary for District 2. In both of these races, fewer than 100 votes separate the candidates.  About 500 votes separate candidates for Circuit Court judge.

These close races in the primary election will serve as a reminder to all of us that each vote IS important, and hopefully we'll make time to vote in the November election.

Politically speaking, "If at first you don't succeed, demand a re-count".

It is important to vote.. especially in these primaries... A lot of folks really don't appreciate this freedom.

Margaret, however this election gets resolved, it will be similar come November as our electorate makes their positions known. It remains to be seen if people are enraged enough to come out and vote, and not let apathy take over.

It frustrates me to no end that EVERYONE that is eligible to vote doesn't go out and do it.  We have fought and lost many lives over this right and it is simply an injustice not to be involved.

Larry, not there yet.  Still counting the votes.  Maryland voting is electronic, so it's not likely a re-count will make any difference.

Joan - Somewhere in my files I have a list of elections decided by one vote.  It really is impressive.

Ed - You're right, of course.  The interesting thing here is that these are candidates in a PRIMARY, not a general election with parties running against each other.

Simon - You're right.  Even in a primary election, it's a wasted opportunity (and privilege) if we don't vote.

Margaret--I hate close elections.  Somehow or other, they just never feel fairly resolved.  I also don't like close sporting events :-).  Guess I can't handle the pressure and stress---how is it I am still in real estate??!

Pat - Now THAT is a very good question!  Maybe you're just saving yourself for the important "close" calls.

Hi Margaret - I don't understand why so few people vote in primaries.  We had a rough time because we just got new voting machines.  There were all sorts of problems feeding the forms.  Glad we had the primary "dress rehersal" rather than finding out the problems in the general election.

Pat, that's so true.  Wow... sorry about the DC primary results...

Ruthmarie - You're right.  Primaries are so very important, especially in the hyper-local elections.  In our area, the incumbents seemed to be favored, and I'm betting that was out of ignorance and laziness rather than knowing the candidates records or agenda.
