When is a closing gift not a gift?

As someone who sells closing gifts (http://www.wevemovedgifts.com/), I get a number of questions about what I feel should guide the decision as to what to select for a client gift. For me, the answer is simple - it should be personal and meaningful to the home buyer or seller. Then it is a great closing gift, while at the same time creating a memorable connection between the client and their real estate agent.

Now since all of my closing gifts are printed, it gives room to put just about anything on them, which creates pretty enticing promotional space for a realtor or loan officer.

"How about I put my name, company and phone number on there," the marketing-driven agents ask me. I invariably disagree if it means I have to print that information on the face of a change-of-address card or note paper.

You see, at the point that a realtor's closing gift becomes a marketing piece, I no longer look at it as a gift. Put your information on the box, or make it part of the packaging. No problem. But for it truly to be personal and appreciated, your closing gift needs to be a gift and not a marketing opportunity.

Excellent point. A personal gift I like to give is a plant. Sometimes a topiary (did I spell that right?)...

I hear ya, Diane.  Last week at Trade Show, I saw a company that sold Knife Sets as closing gifts.  They were all engraved with Real Estae company names, agent names and the like.  All I could think when I saw them is .....   Do you think that Agent will pick up business when their knife is seen in Aunt Maggies 90th Birthday cake?
