Herndon's Classic Homes and Properties. Photo tour of "Old Town" Herndon

By

If you have a Herndon address, there is a very good chance that the home you are living in was built after 1985.

Well, what did Herndon used to look like before it became a large star on the map of the Information Super Highway?

As my children would say, what did it look like in the "olden days" which to them means the 1960's.

Herndon has many beautiful older homes that you may have been driving past for years without ever taking notice.

They actually have big yards and big trees as opposed to most of  the subdivisions which surround old town.

The photo tour below is made up of  some of Herndon's oldest homes as well as some of  Old Town's commercial buildings. There are more photos coming in future posts....I'll link them.

How did Herndon get its name? A historical tidbit from Herndon Web:

"The tracks of the Alexandria, Loudoun and Hampshire Railroad came through the area around 1857 and led to a surge in Herndon's development.

Residents requested that a post office be located at the railroad station and then met to select a name for their town. One resident  was the survivor of a sidewheel steamer named "Central America".

She sank after 3 days and nights of fighting a hurricane off the Carolinas. The ship's captain, William Lewis Herndon, went down with the ship.

The story appealed to the gathering and it was decided to name the town after the heroic captain.

The name "Herndon" was accepted by the Post Office Department and the post office was officially opened on July 13, 1858."

Thanks for sharing a nice piece on your area's history. What a great way to show perspective buyers what the town looks like, and give them info. on it's history.

Thanks Nina, I am trying to post more visual images about our area. In our business people are generally

first attracted to an area or potential home by their senses, then they do the numbers to see if they can get into that neighborhood or property. At least that is the way my wife and I are.
