It Becomes A Law On Monday~No Texting While Driving In Huntsville & Madison, AL

By
Real Estate Agent with Coldwell Banker First, Huntsville, AL 000088288

It finally becomes law on Monday. I wrote a Blog in July when this bill was passed...and now we are here. Madison, Alabama has also adopted this law as well. Both ordinances make it a crime for city drivers to use a wireless communication device to "send, receive, download or view" electronic or digital content. This means no sending text messages, no reading e-mail, no scrolling through music files, no peeking at YouTube. Programming a destination into a satellite navigation unit while driving is also prohibited

The crazy thing is...drivers are still allowed to talk on cell phones. I know that as a real estate agent I pretty much live on the cell phone, GPS, etc. I have made it a priority to not talk on the phone while driving. It is so hard to not look down when I see I got an e-mail, text, etc., but I don't want to be one of those people I see driving and absolutely not paying attention to the road. They are stradling the lanes, going either 15mph too slow (or fast), zipping in and out of traffic...the list goes on and on. As much as I hate it, I have to admit that I wish they would have banned talking while driving too.

So, all of you that are traveling through Huntsville and Madison, AL starting Monday, PAY ATTENTION!

Hey Diane, I agree that talking on the phone can be just as distracting as texting.  Wonder how many tickets they will issue on Monday.  If they put it on the news let me know.

Diane - welcome to a more responsible world it's just to bad that we do not have the sense to do this with out it being legislated. Our law requires hands free for cell phones which is a step in the right direction does yours?

Hi Diane! Thank goodness. In Seattle it is a primary offense if people are talking on the cell phone. Text messaging is also banned. Using cell phone with a hands-free device is OK, but not for drivers who are younger than 18. No cell phones except the emergency.

But........guess what? I still see people talking on the phone or texting while driving. I don't know where their common sense is.

Well, I also saw people reading, eating (yes, with both hands at the same time), putting on make-up, etc. (both here and on the East Coast). Amazing.

Liz~I will let you know but I doubt there will be many.

Kathy~No law here about talking on the phone. Really wish there was.

Ally~I wish they had that same law here. My husband is a firefighter and see so many accidents BECAUSE of being ON the phone or going to answer the phone. It is just amazing.

I read the other day in my Realtor online subscription that real estate agents were #4 in the ranking of professions with the highest number of accidents related to cell phone usage. We've got stop it.

Texting while driving is more dangerous that drunk driving. It's a pproven tested fact. But we don't see ny groups like MADD going after the offenders.
