Assertive? Assertive enough?

By
Real Estate Agent with Coldwell Banker Harris McHaney & Faucette 479-253-3796

Assertive. What do think of the word?

Websters tells me it means: confidently aggressive or self assured; forceful: dogmatic.

In  a perfect world we would speak once and be heard. We would ask once and be answered. In a perfect world your friends and neighbors and mine would only think of you and I regarding real estate deals.

Ahh, but that of course is not to be. As I read (and write) blog after blog about how we are or are not making the biz work for us I keep coming back the the word assertive. Couple assertive with the suffix ness and it defines a type of behavior. Assertiveness.

How assertive must I be to be heard, answered, remembered and hired? Answer this question and you are a top producer. Don't answer and you'll be out of the biz sooner than later. Think of prospecting as assertiveness training. Think of your young child that has not grown accustomed to being told NO. How many times do they ask for that toy? You told them NO how many times?  Think of assertiveness as the only way to make it, because ultimately it is.

 Assertiveness training any one?

Joan, Thank you for reading. If a little 'annoying' gets me the job, well good enough. Some of most successful agents might be called annoying, but not obnoxious.

Harry, Exactly! Everything with balance.

It's easy to confuse assertive with aggressive as Barbara states above. I know they're 2 very different terms. It's not a perfect world and I know I need to be more assertive myself. In our world there's always a lot of noise, if you don't cut through it we'll never accomplish anything. Congrats on the feature. Great post.

Rene, Absolutely. Which is worse? To suffer lack and be out of biz or to be thought a little aggressive? Let's not throw the baby out with the bath water.

Funny you mention kids, the BEST at manipulation and getting what they want.  Its amazing how fast they can size us up and get what they want from us.  We can all take some lessons from them!

Just be sure assertiveness does not come across as rude or pushy. We're not used car salespeople, after all.

I found that simply being persistent and consistent works, too. Maybe they are synonyms for assertive?
