I'm Gonna Wave My Freak Flag High...

I owe a huge debt of gratitude to my next door neighbor, Cheryl. She was 3 or 4 years ahead of me in school and even though I was a punk kid to her we shared a special connection; we both played the French horn. We also shared a huge curiosity for the changes starting to take place in pop music. I spent many wonderful hours in her home listening to vinyl records on her portable record player.

Cheryl had a friend in England that would send her the latest UK releases. Because of her I was one of the first in the US to Meet the Beatles. She was a catalyst to discovery for me and without her influences I probably never would have explored some of the musical paths I chose to.

Our claim to fame in the Northwest at the time was The Ventures (from Tacoma and a totally awesome instrumental guitar band), and we had our share of local talent like Paul Revere and the Raiders, The Sonics, and The Whalers. We listened to their songs on KJR AM and live at local dance clubs like the Spanish Castle and The Target Ballroom. Radio in those days was a pretty sanitized medium.

Then came the first wave of the Brits. It was innocent enough at first with bigger hair, frilly shirts, boots and bell bottoms. The wave didn’t stop, a tipping point happened, and a few short years later with more attitude comes the likes of Jimi “I’m gonna wave my Freak Flag high” Hendrix…

Jimi showed up on the Third Rock from the Sun in a Purple Haze and life would never be the same again.

I’ll never forget as long as I live. I can see the front room in our old house, the carpet, the drapes on the window, the RCA Victor (super huge piece of furniture) radio/record player console…

I put Purple Haze on rather loudly and my Dad totally freaked.  (Understand he’s a card carrying union accordion player who grew up in the other Great Depression). He came storming into the room like a Field Marshall in battle loudly claiming to God, his only begotten son, and the devil that a very serious infraction to 'life as it was meant to be' had just taken place.

We worked our way through those teen years and my Dad and I found a lot of common ground for understanding and appreciation as time went on.  Bless him, he had his tradition. All I knew how to do was show up into my own time. Now I laugh with fond memory how it was so totally NOISE to him, and so totally FREEDOM to me.

I learned the guitar was not only an orchestra in itself, but the source of an unlimited expressive Sound Scape. It was studio as instrument.

I had the good fortune to see Jimi Hendrix live in concert 5 times. What always blew me away was the fact I knew in the studio recordings he played a lot of the guitar parts separately by overdubbing them. Yet, when you heard him live you’d swear it was all there.

It’s amazing the influence that short juncture in the 60’s had on me. And even more amazing that I sit here thinking 40 years ago yesterday, Jimi Hendrix left us. So much of the fire I still have for life was ignited then and although tempered somewhat, still burns bright within me.

Thank you Cheryl, today… “I’m gonna wave my freak flag high”… for Jimi.

Rene, Ah the Good Old Days. How life was so much simpler. Great post, immagine if he was still with us what kind of music he would have added:)

Hi Endre... Funny (in an odd quirky way) he'd be 68 this November. Would have been nice to see where he would have taken that amazing vision over the years...

Rene, Great stuff! I want to know what is on your ipod now.

Can I sit at your feet? lol. That is an amazing account.

Two of my older brothers  could not believe I didn't get the 'sound'.  They tried to force feed me rock from their tremendous collections. Turns out I am so not a rock and roller.  I wanted to get it. My ears wouldn't let me. That said, there are a few pieces of music that reign like Led Zeppelin's Stairway to Heaven.

Born in '57 I was totally struck by all things 'hippie' and would have runaway if I could have mustered just a little more courage..alas I was too young by about 5 years.

Now that is a laugh to think about as well.

Such a beautiful tribute Rene, fellow former french horn player!  My husband also got to see Jimi Hendrix live (just before he ran away to join the circus - true story,) but alas I was too young and all that was left for me were the incredible records.

Charles: Funny... my brother Terry is a little over 6 years older than I. He missed it to. Another story for another blog, he joined the Navy and was off to the Vietnam War serving in Japan. When he came back he was shocked to find his little brother all grown up with shoulder length hair blazing a rock n roll trail to somewhere. What's on my Ipod... Stravinsky, Symphony in C, Agon, and Pulcinella. John Lennon's greatest hits, Bach, Brandenburg Concerto's, Fleet Foxes, Debussy, La Mer, Beatles, Abbey Road, Benjamin Britten, Four Sea Interludes, Bill Evans, assorted solo works, and a bunch of my own stuff I've recorded over the years.

Rene, Sounds to me like a great collection on your ipod.

I hope when you come to the middle of the country I'll get to hear some of your original work. We are indeed talking about the universal language here.

My favorite piece of music on the planet is Canon in D. I'm a fan of piano and classical guitar music. When it comes to vocals I prefer any BIG voice like Josh Groban, Micheal Buble, Sinatra, Dean Martin, Michael McDonald. Lesser knowns...Maura O'Connell, Jane Oliver. All good stuff  for my ears.

Hey Charles: all good voices in your list, both old and new... My tastes are so eclectic. Music is truly a universal language and it matters not if what was 400 years ago or today, speaking from the heart reaches out and grabs you. I love it all... rock to classical, jazz to country, modern (new age), improv to serial, minimalism, to polkas... When someone has the gift, its authentic, spoken from the soul, I get it and love it, even if its not my particular style... I'm working on a site now where I'm going to upload some recordings in studio and live. I'm a ways out though... but it's my winter project... I'll keep you posted. But, it would be more fun to hang out together and listen and talk...

I just read the Wikipedia entry for him last week...probably someone played something of his on Blip.FM and I was curious about him, so I Googled and ended up on Wikipedia.

That he was from Seattle surprised me.  I am not sure why.

I know I did not know the song was him when I first heard it...  I clicked, saw it was Jimi Hendrix and went to see when he died...  that was it.

I guess I did not realize that any of the groups you mentioned were from Seattle.

Pat K's post made me come read...

I admit to being a bit too 'straight' for Jimi.  The Beachboys were more my style along with almost anything R&B.  James Browon, Otis Redding, the Temptations, the Shylites, Sam & Dave, Wilson Pickett . . .

I Feel Gooooooooooooooood!

Hendrix was one of my favorites. Still listen to him every once in awhile. First guitar Star Spangled Banner. Mary is also a great tune.

Maureen... Thanks for stopping by. His memorial is at Greenwood Cemetery. It's just a couple of miles from my place. I thought it was ironic that before they moved Jimi's grave to the memorial, he was basically across the isle from my Dad... Who'd a thought.

Philip... I have a couple of friends that are collectors of vinyl... funny now that it cost $50+ to buy a new album on vinyl.

Michael... Loved the Beach Boys... On their first album, forget which one now, has a blue Fender Mustang... I have that exact same guitar! Love your list... especially Otis and I listened to a lot of the Temptations..

Lyn... The wind cries Mary is one of my all time favorite songs... I could list them all but right up there at the top is Watchtower...
