Exercising Good Habits in Real Estate - Part 1

One of my favorite books is Stephen Covey's 'Seven Habits of Highly Effective People' - a classic that still holds wisdom for today.  Many of us know these habits, but I started thinking about them in a more practical way.  How do I apply these habits to my daily real estate business?

  1. Be proactive - I think about anticipating what my current clients want.  We are in the information age, and clients are constantly looking for more information as a part of their decision making process.  I aim to be the best provider of the information they seek.  If I don't know the answer, I am challenged with finding the person or resource who does.  I'm looking to satisfy my clients' thirst for information as quickly as possible.  And real estate moves pretty quickly.  Buyers change, sellers change, price changes, changes in listing information, contracts, due diligence, closings and so forth.  Real estate is moving and I have to be 'in the know' to be the first resource for clients.
  2. Begin with the end in mind - Where do I want my business to be in a year, two years, five years and so forth?  What will it take for me to get there?  What is the WHY that drives me to achieve this envisioned end?  How do I measure it day in day out to determine if I am making progress?  This one is all about vision.  I have the vision. I have it written down.  I have the incremental milestones that tell me where I am each step of the way.
  3. Put First Things First - So what are the top three, five or seven things I must do daily to get me to my destination - what I have envision as 'success'?  What is most important and critical?  Lead generation has to be number one.  New buyers, new sellers, and converting those leads has to be right behind it.  Equally important is monitoring profitability.  Yes, I can generate a lot of income, but I must be able to control where the flow of the income. And I have to build my team because success must have great support and great support is about great people.

I will continue to exam the Seven Habits and how I am applying them in my real estate business.  More to come.  Best of success to everyone in real estate!
