This past weekend my ex-hubby turned 60. He lives in Germany, where I lived for 17 years. We have to fantastic 'children' together and we share our one and only grandchild, thanks to my daughter Corinna.
Herbert remarried a few years after I returned to the States with our two children. He and his wife had two sons which means that my son and daughter have two half brothers. Years ago, when my two were still teens, they would fly to Europe for the summer and go on vacation with Herbert, his new wife and their two kids. But as my two got older they wanted to spend more time with their own friends here in Florida.
Well as what I consider to be a wonderful birthday gift, Herbert's wife Barbara (yes, she has the same name) decided to surprise Herbert and fly his two kids residing in the States, along with his granddaughter, to Germany for the birthday bash!
Imagine his surprise, since nobody let him know in advance what was going on!!! My daughter and granddaughter flew into Germany last Friday and Corinna's eldest half brother picked them up at the airport in Frankfurt and drove them to his home in northern Bavaria. My ex was so surprised to see the two girls there since they had spent 5 weeks over there this summer.

Saturday was the party and actual birthday. What Herbert did not know was that our son, Sascha, who had been attending a business conference in Denver and had told his Dad that he could not get vacation time, was on his way too!
Sascha flew out of Denver Friday night and arrived Saturday morning in Germany. He took the train to Erlangen and a neighbor picked him up and took him to their home, where he took a nap before the party.
At the party Herbert's wife told him he had more guests arriving, to turn around to meet them. He turned around and told me on the phone he almost had a heart attack when he saw our son, Sascha there too!! Sascha will be spending a little over 3 weeks there while my daughter and granddaughter are flying back tomorrow. Corinna has to be back at work as she is the VE Specialist in a local high school.
The party was great and there were well over 50 guests. During part of the evening my daughter was busy text messaging me greetings from different people that I knew as well from back when I lived over there. Herbert and I telephoned during the party and he was SO HAPPY to have all four of his kids together for his 60th birthday!!!
This was such a special event that I wanted to share this with all of my friends here in ActiveRain!!! Life is short and it seems to breeze by - we all make mistakes and blunder on as best we can. Special events like this are things that make the heart grow and glow!!!
