I would love some feedback from the seasoned pros on Active Rain as to which is the smartest way they've used their money to promote themselves.  Was it ads in the local paper, Internet, shopping carts, giveaways?  I am at a place right now where I want to use some money for promoting myself, but being new means I don't have tons to throw around.  I know that I have to spend money to make money.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Jane, I'd agree that you'll get the most results for your dollar on the Internet.  I don't think billboard ads, putting your name on bus benches or giving away refrigerator magnets is a good way to spend your marketing budget.

A first-rate website is a start.  Once you get one website going, you may want to try two.  Buy domain names that contain community keywords in areas where you sell.  Develop a blogsite and contribute to it regularly.  Network with first-rate agents, not only in your immediate area but all over the country.  You'll eventually receive referrals from those contacts.

Another great way to spend your money is on designations.  I highly recommend the CRS, ABR and e-PRO as worthwhile, not only for their designation value but also for the marketing opportunities they provide.

Spend your money working your sphere of influence, that is make a list of everyone you know, friends family and friends of family.  Take your time and write genuine heart felt letters about your choice to do this work and how you feel your choice can benefit them.  Do this every month and work on web presence as the web is the future, most other forms of marketing are tired and have been worked into the ground.  Work also on adding to that data base by making an effort to meet people as you go about your day, tell them what you do and ask if they have a professional in the business that they would refer if they had the need, if they don't have one ask to become that person for them.  Good luck.

Thank you for asking the question, great comments.  I had the same questions. Good luck, and thanks for helping all of the rest of us.
