Lesson on the road to Duck

Some times we have the opportunity to learn something in the most unexpected circumstances. Here's my lesson on the road to Duck.

The road at the south end of Duck is undergoing some major construction work. This stretch is now gravel - dusty and bumpy. Traffic now slows to a crawl going through the construction zone. If you've been to Duck or Corolla on the Outer Banks, you know this road is the only road for travel in this area.

Chapel on the sound in Duck NCBefore Sunday school this past weekend we had a big discussion about the inconvenience and the snail pace causing traffic backups. Then Paul Keller told his story about living and driving on a farm. Don't you know to listen when you get the opportunity to hear sensible, common sense wisdom!

Instead of driving at 5 MPH and hitting every tiny bump and rut, drive at the speed limit or slightly under. The ride will actually be smoother. I tried it at the 25 MPH speed limit, and it really works!

Now that doesn't mean we should be reckless and drive faster than we should. It means try this at a practical speed and amaze yourself with a smoother ride.

I hope my lesson on the road to Duck will make your ride smoother. No construction nearby? Perhaps this is your excuse to come to the Outer Banks and Duck this fall. The weather here is perfect.

Umm I never thought about it, but it makes sense.  The name Duck caught my eye!!  What a name for a city (is it?)  What is the history on Duck?

Melanie,

Thanks for your comment. Yes, Duck really is a town, well more of a small village. Back in the early 1900's Duck was a spot where sportsmen from the north came to hunt. Also many local people would shoot duck and send them to the north both for food and feathers.

We've grown up and are now a great vacation spot. On the east coast of North Carolina. Duck is one of the small towns that make up the Outer Banks. The Outer Banks consists of about 4 islands that make up this barrier reef. Basically we're a "ribbon of sand" if you look at the map. We're blessed with warm days, sea breezes, summer vacationers. I know there are some beautiful places in this country, but I think this is the best. I hope you can make it to the east coast some time to see for yourself.

Pat,

That cute little building sits behind Duck United Methodist Church. If you'd like to see it, there is a boardwalk to the immediate south of the church. It will wind you through the woods and over the wetlands. The sound view from the chapel is beautiful. Relax and enjoy. The quiet of the chapel will provide peace. Go on in and sit a spell. You're welcome
