Joseph Mendel, Furniture Maker, at the Greenbrier’s Art Colony Shops, Part 2
You will find the skilled artisan of wood, Joseph Mendel, working on a piece of furniture in his gallery, “Joseph Mendel Furniture Maker” any day of the week. As I listened to Joseph talk and work you could feel his excitement of being able to create and carve beautiful pieces of wood. This was indeed a unique experience for me!
A big feat for Mendel and his wife, Linda, was opening the gallery in one month. They arrived in June and the Joseph Mendel furniture gallery opened in July at The Greenbrier’s Art Colony on Alabama Row. In the gallery, 19 pieces of his furniture are on display, and visitors/customers can watch Mendel at work, creating and carving beautiful pieces with decorative inlay. Mendel also has a studio located in Lewisburg, WV.
Originally from Queens, NY, Joseph Mendel attended Eastern Michigan University where he was certified to be a shop teacher. He decided to specialize in period furniture and went to North Bennett Street School, the oldest and most prestigious furniture maker school in the country. “Attending North Bennett, was the best because there I learned that there was nothing I couldn’t make. The school was definitely a confidence builder for me”, says Mendel.
With six years of formal education in the making of 17th to 19th century furniture, Mendel has trained with various master craftsmen since his teenage years, taking from each the penchant for wood. He crafts each furniture piece with meticulous detail using finely tuned hand tools and skilled hands. All wood is selected and used with care to take full advantage of its natural qualities. Mendel says. “I work with time-tested joinery techniques and the highest quality materials, stressing construction of uncompromising standards."
"Creating custom fine furniture of exceptional quality and style is my passion. I take pride in knowing a client has chosen to add a piece of my furniture to their home.” Read Joseph Mendel’s philosophy on making furniture.
