Photography | The Newfoundland

While I was at the Art Walk on the Bay this Saturday, I came across this amazing beautiful specimen, the Great Newfloundland. This male weighs in at 149 pounds. I was smitten with his warm and sweet personality. When I approached him hoping to take his photo, he raised his leg and handed me his paw.

This species was rightfully named, the Gentle Giant. They were first breed as fisherman dogs in Newfoundland. As large as he is, one of things that this breed is known for is their great swimming strength. They have a huge lung capacity for swimming long distances and have been often used as rescue dogs on the water.

They have a double coat of waterproof hair and coupled with massive webbed feet they can endure very cold water temperatures and they have powerful strokes in the water that help them overcome strong waves and powerful tides in the ocean. This guy was so loveable.

Thanks Jim, Glad you enjoyed them. Thinking about Dante is  am sure a good thing and associates us back to all of our good memories of our special family members.  Every four legged dog I see always makes us think about my favorite little ones too.

William, Wha a beautiful dog this is one breed that I have never heard of.  The last time that I had a dog raise his leg it was not to shake my hand.:)

Hi Don, You are too funny. Most of the time we see that coming, we are not usually expecting it to be the front paw however, LOL

Hi David, How lucky for Tuesday that however she got separated from here first family  at least now she is safe and loved. Aren't they incredible beings. I weigh less than 10 lbs more than the one I encountered but he looked so much bigger than me because of beautiful black coat. So I have decided I'm getting me one. Not the dog, the coat, :-)

William,

We used to keep Great Danes. They too are gentle giants.  I've not been around a Newfoundland but they sound a lot like the personalities of the danes.  Since we have room for them to roam, we had three at one time.  They do not have long lives though.. and we did not want to have danes again because I did not want to go through the grief when they died.

Beautiful dog and a very revealing photograph, capturing his personality so well.

Hi Jane, To be sure I would get him a Hat and Sunglasses. I did notice the sun really bothered him and his companion was walking him in that direction.

William,  Beautiful pictures...the Newfoundland's I have met have always had wonderful personalities.  But the idea of being close to him when he gets out of the water (and all that shaking) makes me think I may as well take the swim with him!

William - that is indeed an absolutely beautiful dog! A fishing dog - I can picture him along the shore!

Hi Deborah, I can just imagine.LOL And you are right, better swim with him. Which I would bet would be fun because for sure, they are not afraid of the water. At their size, might be nice to just hang on for the ride as well. :-)

Hi Barbara Jo, 1st let me say how flattered I am that you have been on all my posts lately. To me, this is a really big compliment.

This beautiful creature on the shore, in the water, on the boat would quite a picture. If I were a fisherman, I am guessing that this would be the dog for me. I can see how he would be a perfect fit.

Hi Joan, I read something about what that is and I forgot the reason already but as we remember, Love is never having to say you're sorry and I would guess the trade off of drooly for love is fair one.

I haven't stopped thinking about it. I want to get a little MAX one day.Puppy Love.

Here is exactly what he will look like when I find him. He has the same markings as my little Tinker girl did.

Hi Debra, Thank you, I couldn't miss the opportunity this past Saturday when there he was. I asked his companion if I could take his photo. As I approached him and put out my hand, he lifted is paw to allow me to shake it. From there he looked like he found a new friend. Because other people started to come around, I could not move easily around him  but we did OK.

Dogs always recognize good people hence the paw lifting.  :-)

Hi Debra,

His companion told me he usually only does that with her. How sweet of you to suggest that.
