mickey mouseAnd how does Mickey Mouse relate to home staging you ask?  Well I have a very long and interesting tale to share about our dear old Walt!  You will be amazed, you will be astounded, and most of all by the time I’m finished you will be a believer.

OK, just kidding.  I just wanted to let you all know that I’m off to DisneyLand.  I’ll be back on Thursay!  My husband is going to Anaheim for a business trip and I decided I’d go with him.  My daughter, Adeline hasn’t been to Cali since she was 4 months old.  She is just getting to the age (turned 2 in Oct.) that she should enjoy the theme park.  However, she’ll have no idea who any of the Disney characters are; we watch no TV.

The change in weather will be nice, it’s been very cold here.  I know I just found AR, but I am going to miss you all.  I’ll try to check in over the week.  Take Care,  Jessica

Hey Jessica,

That sounds like a fun time to me!  Since Adeline is not familiar with the characters, I wonder if she's going to freak out when she sees these big furry things in weird get-ups coming at her?!

We're going to miss you though, because you bring a certain 'playfulness' onto AR...and so, while you're playing with those furry big guys, we shall carry on (insert tear)...

Oh, and Jessica?   As they say at the theme park..."Have a Disney Day"!!!

Have a great time with your husband and your daughter.  How fun.

Wow your daughter is the same age as my son! Don't be surprised if she freaks out at those "huge creatures" . It's much better to let her go to them by herself. But what fun you will have. Enjoy!

Thanks guys!
Yes I am quite concerned about the costumed characters. We were at a 'theme' restaurant the other night that boasted 'wiley the coyote', and Adeline was scared to death.  She is so gusty she practically jumped off the 2nd story slide, but this strange man in coyote get-up she wailed any time he came near.  That guy was so annoying though; he kept coming up to her even though it was obvious that she wasn't happy about it.  We even moved out into the empty foyer of the restaurant to avoid him (I was nursing my 5 month old), but he followed us there.  I had to go over and ask him to stay away.

If you think about it though, it's perfectly sane and normal for children to distrust someone wearing a mask.  I would much rather re-enforce that she should trust her instinct and risk making Mickey feel bad, than force her to interact against her better judgment.

Jessica,

Have an enjoyable time, and I do hope your daughter has fun, too.  Maybe some of those 'creatures' will make her smile and laugh instead of scaring her.

Take lots of pictures so you can share some of them on your blog with us!

Have fun!
Ann

Hey Jessica

Have a great time in Disney with your husband and daughter. You will make memories that will last a lifetime. My first trip was many years ago, my daughter Christie then 3 fell in love with the characters and would not leave poor Tigger alone. I have precious photos of her that I cherish and now she is a mom and her 2 year old son (my little Giovanni) reacted the same exact way when he saw Clifford the Big Red Dog.

You will cry when you see the excitement on her face. Treasure these days, they fly by...

Hi there!

We're back after an extended trip to Anaheim.  We had to stay an extra 3 days there because the trucking company my husband was co-ordinating with 'dropped the ball'.

Adeline had a great time at "DizzyLand".  We only went there for 2 days, I thought more would be overload and I was right.  The rest of the time we hung out by the pool/spa/kiddie fountain; that part was very relaxing.

One of the days I went to Newport Beach with the girls.  I found a small park/playground for Adeline to play in which was nice; then we spent about 1 1/2 hours on the beach.  Adeline LOVED IT.  She ran in the waves, ran around in the sand, dug up the sand, picked sea shells, dug the sand some more.  It was wonderful to watch her so involved and intent and enjoying herself so immensly (and not clinging to me the whole time!).

Disneyland, to be honest was more stressful than it was fun. I was there on my own (husband was working) with my 6 month old and my 2 year old.  And it really bugged me how most of the rides for very young children in fantasyland were fearmongering and sensationalized.  Even the Peter Pan ride was scary (which shouldn't surprise me really since the movie is), Pinochio was terrifying and I didn't even attempt Snow White because it said on the outside of the ride Snow White's Scary Adventure. It's A Small World, practically the only optimistic ride in the entire park, was closed for Christmas decoration.

It was really sweet though, when my  2 year old said on day 4 that she wanted to 'go home and see grandpa and the dogs'. and when I asked her the next day if she wanted to go to Disneyland or to home, she enthusiastically chose grandpa and the dogs!  To complete the experiment, the day after we got back, I asked her if she wanted to go back to California tomorrow to Disneyland, and once again she preferred home and the dogs.  That's my girl!

It's good to be back though, and now that I'm settled I'll be playing in the rain again.

Having lived in Anaheim until precisely the first possible day I could 'legally' escape, Disneyland should be restricted to kids 5 and up... otherwise it's not fair to the Moms and the Dads.  Under 5 is just too young to appreciate what's happening and they get overwhelmed.  Glad you made the best of it (but also glad grandpa and the dogs won out)!
