Blood Drive in the Making

I recently sponsored a Habitat for Humanity Day here in Salt Lake City, UT and was blessed in so many ways by the participation.http://activerain.com/blogsview/184243/Recovering-From-a-Heart My goal with my business is to implement a Charity event every 2-3 months.  Not only because the giving feels so good, but most importantly the need is so badly required.

The thought came across my mind to sponsor a blood drive.  So yesterday i met with the American Red Cross http://www.redcross.org/   in our community to set up a blood drive for October.  Hmmmm…Halloween.  “I want to draw your blood”  The representative Anne mentioned that it’s very hard to get people involved.  OK i have to admit, i hear those words and it makes me want to try to get the best turn out ever and this is where you come in.  Have any of you sponsored a blood drive?  What did you do to make it a success?  Did you have an incentive other than the obvious, giving?  I have just a couple weeks to get this underway, so if you will please donate your blood (thoughts) and help me reach my goal I would appreciate it dearly.

Some of the myths of blood donation:

It’s only needed for major tragedies.  Wrong! It’s needed all the time.  Tragedies happen often, but not all are put in the media.

The blood will be there when something happens.  It may not.  We have to keep on giving.  The supplies may not hold up if some major tragedy happens.

If I go in for surgery and blood is needed, they’ll have it there for me.  Why not go donate your own blood before hand and have the hospital use it if necessary?

I have been a faithful donor for almost a decade, and after tomorrow's donation I'll have given two gallons and three pints. What you're doing is very admirable, and I definitely commend you.

I feel guilty if I don't donate.  The most painful part is when I remove the bandaid from my arm.  My blood type and donation can be used by up to 5 patients.  We all can afford 25 minutes of our time to save lives.

I've donated several times and always find the time spent worthwhile.  I did learn however to not try to stand up directly afterwards.  I need my cookies and juice brought to me or I find myself slumping to the floor :-)   I hope I didn't scare anyone with that, it is rare that it happens!

I did it once...gave blood...and fainted... what a wuss I am.....

I found the nurse slapping my face lightly and saying,"Sir, are you there...wake up..."

Pretty embarassing....

I have never done one since....

Sorry.

Danielle-That is so wonderful what you have done.  Think of all the lives that you have saved.  You are the one who deserves commending.

Kevin-This is so awesome to see such a great response of people giving back.  You as well have made such a positive impact on the lives of others.  Thank you!

Kris-You also understand the value of giving.  Oh and scaring people?  No I think people need to know that it's possible to get light headed.  I was told to drink a lot of water the day before, a lot the day of and eat good meals consisting of protein the day before and the day of.  Then your body has a much better response to the gift that you are giving.

Alexander-No need to be embarrassed.  I had the same thing happen the first time, but it was due to the fact that I had nothing to eat the entire day, walked down to the donation area (at my work), gave blood and passed out.  It was awful.  They kept me there until I was better.  When they asked what I had eaten, well that was the embarrassing part.  I should have known better.  So I tried it again and again and never had the same problem. Maybe you'll want to give it another shot, but do what was recommended to me (please read my response to Kris).  Thank you for sharing.

Julie,

You are rocking! What a great idea, I think you can pull it out on Halloween! I donated for the first time a few weeks ago, it feels good knowing you are helping save lives! :)

Diane-Thank you for sharing that you have been a recipient.  When we donate, we never know who will be receiving our blood or why, but knowing that it could save a life, that makes it all worthwhile.  I'm so excited about this opportunity again.

Suzanne-That is so awesome that you just recently had your first donation.  It is such a wonderful feeling.  Just knowing that makes us want to go back for more.  Especially when the recruitment officer for American Red Cross told me that it's difficult to get donations a lot of the time and people wait for some big event or tragedy to give blood.  I'm determined to get a great turnout on this one.  My EO is getting her entire office involved and one of the lenders I work with.  How exciting!

Hi Julie,
What a good idea and worthy cause. I haven't donated in a while but this just might be the needed push I needed to get me going again.  Thank you.

That sounds like a good idea and yet another great way to meet people.  I personally donated plasma to help pay for school but blood is another great way to give back to others.
