U.G. White Hardware originally began in 1917 and was known as U.G. White Hardware and Implement Co. on south Marion Street. The original proprietor, Ulysses Grant White, lost his right arm in a farming accident. Mr. Grant went on to create a business that has influenced Athens, Alabama. Athens was a prominent cotton and railroad hub for the Limestone County seat.
After twenty years Mr. White sought a more strategic location and in 1937 bought and remodeled the corner of 101 Jefferson Street where it remains today.
For nearly a century, U.G.White has been supplying local farmers and Cotton mill workers. From Farmalls to work the fields in, to heating stoves and radios, the hardworking laborers knew they could count on U.G. White to keep them supplied with whatever they needed. This continues to be their philosophy today!
The original philosophy still thrives today, under the guidance of Derrick Young and Johnny Furline. They like to say “On 101 Jefferson St. time stands still in a diverse environment that preserves, connects, and supplements anyone who wishes to participate in traditional southern culture.” I couldn’t agree more!
