I wrote a comment that gave birth to this post. I have had many interactions with foreigners who come into this country and purchase inexpensive properties in acceptable neighborhoods. It is not their dream home. You see...to these type of people, just owning something is the biggest thrill of their lives....

They understand the following.....

1. They now own something in the United States of America....this is something we tend to minimize for some reason. Let that sink in....they own a piece of America.......wow!

2. They are now building equity and have a future they can count on. They went in low and slow. Didn't over pay.

3. It is in line with their beliefs which is to work hard and get ahead. Many entertain doing just that and.... at the end of their journey...going back to their country...... wherever that is.

4. They know that holding this position for 5, 10, 15 years or ..?.....makes them money. It makes sense.

5. In their little world, pride of ownership goes a long way.....

6. They can always rent the unit out and buy another over the years.  Because of the sense of empowerment...it makes them feel like a King. To the folks back in their country, they are proof that US of A works and so do they.......

7. They can sell the unit and trade up to their dream home.....if and when they choose. Another good feeling...

I remember my first home. Nothing fancy, in a decent neighborhood. After the purchase, I concentrated on getting my kids through school, making sure they were safe, paying bills, enjoying life and it all makes sense. At some point, I traded up and life became more enjoyable. I did it again as well. This is good stuff...if you do it for the right reasons.....

At the end of the day....when someone has put in a long one.....they get to go home, eat, drink, watch TV, talk with their families and feel good about life......This pursuit of life, liberty, and happiness includes the owning of your own home. This will never go away.....it just offers too much value in return......

When all this recession started I became concerned that I live in a condo. If you live in a single family home, you usually have a yard. In really bad times, you can grow your own food. You don't feel as hopeless as we condo dwellers. I can imagine what would happen if I put chickens on my patio!

It is the old story, isn't it.  A home as a home first, investment second.  Certainly how I grew up.

Kathy...if they are fried chickens.....you are probably going to meet all your neighbors. Have them each bring a dish and make-it an open house event......Seriously, you have a place. Be thankful for it and don't get caught up in the "more" syndrome. It just robs you of any joy or sense of worth. Remember, all that stuff stays here for others to play with long after you are gone. Make use of it while you are here....whatever you have.....best Kathy

Jeanne...look how simple and pure the subject matter can truly be.....AS ORIGINALLY INTENDED. I used to complain about my shoes until I met a man with no feet.....Buy something and live your life. Don't make it the center of your life, just a compliment to it....There are so many other things to do while living life. I am reminded when I used to vacation. I would stay in the best Hotels and pay top dollar. One day, it dawned on me. I was only sleeping there. I was out all day long. Why was I paying so much just to sleep....? So it is with the subject matter. Buy something....and be content already! Best Jeanne

Great way to put it in perspective Richie...We still own our first house, rancher, 2 car garage, 1/3 acre corner lot...Never went the 'house poor' route of some of our friends...Borrowed against the equity to help our 2 kids purchase their homes...Did the same for our daughters wedding...Still have a small mortgage after all that but everybodys happy...Enjoy the day.

We all, my friends and I, all bought homes in the 70's at 13 1/2 % interest and the houses all needed work.  We were thrilled to get into a house and happy to strip the wallpaper, paint and change the carpet.  OMG-now I sound like an old timer (When I was your age, I walked 5 miles to school every day in bare feet, etc.) This buyer's market and the collective mindset of the day does not emulate that-except-as you pointed out-among folks who are not natives.  Thans for the post, Richie!

Our first home in 1980 was an FHA loan at 10%.  We considered ourselves fortunate to have a home of our own.

Yes, the pitch today is like old wine in new bottles, but to a large extent, it's based on human values like family, security, building equity and saving for the future.  Your post is a good reminder that some of those values don't change, regardless of the passage of years.

Ernie...I got 1/3 acre and love it. It is the perfect size to maintain and play with....I helped the kids too.....Your comment proves the point that this system of buying something and holding it...works like a charm..It even keeps working if you stay the course.....the steady course. That small mortgage you say you have means more than it implies....but you identify it very well. You said....EVERY-ONES HAPPY and that my dear man is the true value. The house only compliments it.....Good man Ernie......

Barbara....don't panic about sounding like an old-timer. I walked to school in the snow (bare feet?). Now as to your comments.... We should be content with whatever we have as it is on "loan" (pun) and what part of that don't we get already..? The house should serve us and not us serve the house. Barbara....life is good and thanks for your comments...

Eric....your comment just puts a cheery on my sundae ......Post. The process is a simple one. I once met a young man who was ambitious and in a hurry to become wealthy. He had a small family and dreamed big....I told him...Buy a home. A small one. In 20 years if you did nothing else, you made $$$$ lots of it. That is how simple this is. Now, if you want to add to that, go for it, but just remember that your worse case scenario of owning a home free and clear works. It freed him up right there and then and he told me he felt releived and renewed at the same time. The system works........Eric....good to hear from you

Richie:  So well portrayed.  The American Dream of home ownership is a benchmark we all aspire to.  I find it extremely sad that so many have lost their homes and may never again be able to realize that dream again.  Guess this is such a huge wake-up call for so many.  I genuinely pray daily that we can restore this economy  and enable people to have a second chance.

Tish...thank you....here are a couple of things that steer you to the upside of the negative..:

1. FHA will welcome you into their program 2-3 years thus enabling you re-participate in the "Dream"...

2. The economy of the United States is designed so that it needs you, its population to participate in it. They over did this this last time, but will re-adjust and then businesses, housing, cars and goods will all be re-introduced at market value or below..... which is affordable and attractive.

Remember Tish...we all know what goes up must come down...but he opposite is true too...what goes down starts the journey up all over again....Real Estate cycles.......Best always Tish

Richie - What an uplifting post.  Buying a home is the American dream....and small dreams (modest homes) can lead to bigger dreams over time!
