Utah – Why do people like Utah?

The name "Utah" comes from the Native American "Ute" tribe and means people of the mountains. After being settled by the Mormon pioneers the state nickname became the Beehive State, due to the busyness of the pioneers.

The state capitol is Salt Lake City, originally called Great Salt Lake City “Great” was dropped from the name in 1868.

Our state Motto is "Industry", our state song is Utah, We Love Thee, our state bird is the California Gull or Seagull, our state animal is the Elk and our state cooking pot is the Dutch Oven!

Utah is ranked the 11th largest state with 84,900 square miles. Kings Peak is the highrest spot in Utah and reaches an unbelievable 13,528 ft in the Uinta Mountains while Beaver Dam Wash is the lowest spot at a modest 2, 350 ft. Kings Peak is located in Duchesne County in the Northeast part of the state, and Beaver Dam Wash is near St. George in Washington County in the state's southwest quadrant.

Utah has five national parks: Arches, Canyonlands, Zion, Bryce Canyon and Capitol Reef.

Utah has seven national monuments: Cedar Breaks, Natural Bridges, Dinosaur, Rainbow Bridge, Grand Staircase-Escalante, Timpanogas Cave and Hovenweep.

Utah has two national recreation areas: Flaming Gorge and Glen Canyon

Utah has six national forests: Ashley, Dixie, Fishlake, Manti La-Sal, Uinta and Wasatch-Cache.

Utah is a great vacationland with 11,000 mi of fishing streams and 147,000 acres of lakes and reservoirs.

Utah’s annual rainfall varies from less than five inches in Utah's arid Great Salt Lake Desert to more than 60 inches in the northern mountain ranges.

Utah’s vital statistics! Based on the 2000 census, Our median age is 26.7 years. We are  ranked the youngest in the nation. Our birth Rate of 21.7 births/1,000 population is ranked highest in the nation.

We have a death Rate of 7.9 deaths/1,000 population, and are ranked 2nd lowest in the nation.

Utah’s household size of 3.13 persons/household is ranked largest in US.

We rank number three in the longest lifetime category at 77.7 years and have the highest literacy rate in the nation. Ninety-four percent of residents age 20 and over can read, and write and 89.3 percent have graduated from high school.
