Time to get things ready for winter

As Summer officially comes to an end, we know that winter won't be far away.  And before the rain/snow and cold sets in it is a good time to take care of some basic maintenance issues around your home.

You probably have a list of your own started, but below are somethings on my to-do list that I thought I'd share.

Good luck and I hope you enjoy the last bit of nice weather before it is gone.  They are saying we will have a cold wet fall and winter here in the Pacific Northwest, but this weekend is suppose to be absolutely lovely.

Enjoy!

Clean out the gutters - If you have rain gutters on your home then cleaning them out in the fall is the best time.  You will want to wait until most of the leaves have fallen and don't forget to check that they are still working properly once cleaned out.

Remove pots and planters - I've noticed that my hanging baskets are looking pretty drab these days.  It won't be long before they are just done and I need to take the hanging baskets down and store them for next year.

Rake the leaves- Keeping your yard free of leaves is an important part of fall clean-up.   If you don't get the leaves off the lawn before winter you may find your grass is dead once next spring arrives.

Weed and feed the lawn- The best time to weed and feed the lawn is in the fall.  By feeding your lawn with fertilizer in the fall, you are promoting healthy root growth, and this will help your lawn grow greener and faster next spring.

Clean your tools - Once you have finished your fall maintenance chores, make sure your tools are cleaned and stored properly for the winter.  You may want to oil your sheers, store your wheel barrel upside down and spray off the underside of the lawnmower.  Then when next spring arrives you will be able to find them and they will be in working order and ready for you to use them once again.

Have your furnace serviced and cleaned - Before that first cold night is upon us, it might be a good time to make sure your furnace is in working order for the long winter months ahead.  And don't forget to check your furnace filters too.

Have a certified chimney sweep inspect and clean your fireplace- Soot and creosote can build up inside the chimney and can ignite when a fire is lit in the fireplace.

Check that all windows and doors are functioning property  - Make sure that all your windows and doors are caulked and sealing properly.  You don't want your heat escaping out faulty doors and windows all winter long.

And with the time change comes changing the batteries in the smoke detectors.  I'll have to print this out and give it to my husband to get started on.
