Clean House = Dream Home

Humans can be funny. I can complain about and insult my sister, but if someone else does it, it's not OK.

Disgust-o-meter

Same thing with what I'll overlook in the way of a less than perfectly clean house - when it's my house - and what would take me to the extreme on the disgust-o-meter in someone else's house.

Living in our homes, we can turn a blind eye to a layer of dust, cobwebs above the kitchen cabinets, the stainless steel sink that's lost its luster.

Old attic

But once your house is for sale, finding these - and more intense signs that the house needs a thorough cleaning - can add, little by little, to a negative feeling that has buyers saying no.

Most of us know to get rid of the bigger and more obvious things - mysterious stains, strong odors, creepy things in the attic...   But, as a seller, you can't afford to overlook the "constant drip" effect of room after room that feels, looks or smells dirty.

When putting a house on the market, you're creating a dream for buyers. Buyers want to feel that dream, and more importantly, feel as though they can have it. An essential part of the dream is that the house is absolutely ready for them to move in and start living that dream immediately, not after having to bring in an army of cleaners - or a Hazmat team - to get it ready.

Flowers on table

Unless you're willing to sell for far less than what the market could bring you, you'll need to dust, vacuum, and scrub the house from top to bottom.

A clean, well maintained house doesn't require scented candles, sprays or plug-ins. If it's thoroughly clean, and kept that way while it's on the market, buyers may very well find that your house is their dream home.

Impact your bottom line: Clean, clean, clean - Hire a team if necessary, and make your home shine. Remember that how you live and how you sell are very different things!

Usually when you tell a seller to Declutter , Declutter, Declutter they ultimately will have to clean, clean clean because they have moved everything around and the Dust Bunnies come out of hiding

Hi Laura - Too true!  Although in some home, the dust bunnies are less shy -   ;-)   -   de-cluttering will certainly expose them. Thanks for visiting.

This is so True!!!!!!!!!!! We do turn a blind eye (and nose) in our own home - we don't notice it.  We become accustomed to it.  But, others view VERY differently.

Debbie - Yes, the real trick is being to look at what's been our home for a while with a fresh eye - not always such an easy thing to do!

This is a wonderful post Judy and so very true. I tell my clients that if they detail clean their homes (like detailing their cars) and keep it that way, they will be 90% ahead of their competition. Dirty never sells.

Yes, awesome post, Debbie!!

And, Shar, I use the "Detailing the Car for Re-sale" analogy with a lot of my clients. People really relate with that one.

So true that we become blind to our surroundings in our own residence, but are so quick to point out flaws in others' homes.

Hi Valerie!  Thanks very much for this. Flickr has an amazing variety of photos, doesn't it? If I'm not careful, I could get lost in there for days...  ;-)

Hi Marilyn - So glad my post struck a chord for you!  Flickr is really a great resource - I found out about it from Valerie Zinger.  So many really good photos you just need to choose those that can be used as long as you give the artist their attribution. Once on Flickr, I click on Common Ground (a link I found at the bottom of the screen). Good luck - and have fun with it!

Hi Dagny - It's an amazing resource, and one it's easy to lose yourself in. There are so many great photos there, many available for re-use as long as you include info about the source of the photo. Type in a topic, and all kinds of photos are listed. Fun!
