A Unique Shopping Experience at the Greenbrier's Art Colony Retail Shops - Part 4, Atlantis Leather, Unusual Collection of Handcrafted Leather Goods
Atlantis Leather was founded in 1972 and opened at the Greenbrier Hotel in 1995. Tom and Kathy Eure, owners of this unique shop, have collaborated on the design and production of quality leather work for over a quarter of a century. Before opening their shop, they sold their work at juried craft shows on the East Coast.
Atlantis Leather's specialty is the unusual. The comment most often heard is "That's made out of leather"? And, that is exactly what I said when I saw some of the leather items, i.e., a leaf, fruit, flowers, masks, and so much more.
Tom Eure first started doing leatherwork while traveling with three friends from Richmond, Va. to Philadelphia, Pa. by horse drawn covered wagon in 1971. After this three month odyssey he returned to Richmond and opened his first leather shop in the back room of a friends barber shop. 
In 1977, at a private showing of a friends paintings, he met his wife of thirty years plus, Kathy Kaylor, an art student with an extensive background in crafts. The two immediately started to collaborate on the design and production of what was to become their life's work.
In 1978, they decided to move to the mountains of West Virginia, where they raised their daughter Jessica. Now living in Frankford, WV, they continue to develop their line of handbags, belts and leather accessories. Classic and lightweight fine leather bags and some of the most unique leatherwork being produced by American crafts.
Since opening Atlantis Leather at the Greenbrier, they have put together a group of top American leather artists to complement their own classic designs. Now entering their sixteenth year in the artist's colony, they continue to find new and exciting work for their shop.
Everything is hand made...you will find masks, leather purses, travel kits, embossed journals, leather bouquets, leather jewelry, wooden puzzles of carved animals made into a puzzle (dogs, bears, fish, alligators, snakes, moose, etc.) They have a carved chocolate lab puzzle that I may have to buy as a Christmas present.
Of course, while visiting the gallery I had to buy a beautiful black leather handbag. The best part..........it was on sale.
