I love autumn/fall of all the seasons. Being a New Englander and living in Rhode Island I love the changes that now begin to occur. This was our first fall day and what a gorgeous day we had in the mid 80's

Pam, thank you for your post about the begining of Autumn 2010

Welcome to the first day of Autumn.  September 22, 2010 @ 11:09 p.m (8:09 p.m here in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho).Autumn - Coeur d'Alene Idaho Homes for Sale

Today is the autumnal equinox.  It marks the first day of the fall season. On this day, the Sun is again directly over the earth's equator, and daylight lasts 12 hours in the Northern Hemisphere and decreasing. This day is typically recognized as September 22 in the Northern Hemisphere. In the Southern Hemisphere, the first day of spring is recognized on September 23.

The first day of winter will be on December 21, 2010 @ 6:38 p.m ET  (3:38 pm. here in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho).

Equinox and Solstice

The angle between the Earth's axis and the Earth-Sun line changes throughout the year. Twice a year, at the spring and fall equinox (around March 21 and September 22.  The exact date may vary a bit) the two directions are perpendicular.

Twice a year, the angle is as big as it can get, at the summer and winter solstices, when it reaches 23.5 degrees. In the summer solstice (around June 21) the north pole is inclined towards the Sun, in the winter solstice (around December 21) it faces away from it.

And don't forget to check out the beautiful "harvest moon." I love St. Augustine, but I do miss the glorious colors of autumn in western Pennsylvania!

Kathleen, I love those colors when I'm looking up, but I don't care too much for them when I'm looking down. That's when I have a rake in my hand
