Bernie Marcus, one of the founders of Home Depot is featured in an interview from one of the reporters of a local Atlanta TV station. He is not kind to this administration, nor to Bush, with his analysis and insight into how small business owners are being hurt. He points out that Home Depot could not have been created under this administration. He makes suggestions on what and how to fix things.
When asked about the current package design to help samll business he is quick to point out that it is a feel good piece of legislation that will probably fail. While large companies like GE/GM/etc could benefit small businesses won't, from things like a single year acclerated investment depreciation. If a small business does not know what liabilities will be facing it that business will be less likely to invest in capital improvements. Larger companies, such as GM do not have the same concerns.
He also points out that while a small business owner may make over $250,000 one year, that during the previous, or the next, they may lose money. And that difference between the taxes that they will pay under the higher tax structure might make the difference.
I was somewhat surprised to see this interview on the late news as it was very critical of the administration. I commend Channel 11 for being balanced and airing an opposite view from what many of their stories are.
The full interview is over 18 minutes long but worth listening to:
A shorter, 3 min 22 second excerpt was what was aired on the news program last evening, over 10% of the broadcast news time.
