"Noblesse Oblige". What Does That Mean?

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with KGC Properties LLC, Tucson Property Management & Real Estate

Noblesse Oblige.  It's a French saying, in its original form, the phrase means that "we must act in accordance with the position we occupy, whatever it is, with the reputation we have acquired."  Simply said, "anyone who claims to be noble must conduct him/herself nobly."

It doesn't matter how "correct, perfect, professional, honest, diligent, thorough",etc., we are or try to be - there is and will always be someone who will challenge your integrity for whatever reason they deem important.

With real estate transactions,  I find that at several times, but particulary at one of these stages...

Home inspections ~  Underwriting phase ~  Just about right before closing

...clients can get very difficult, can become unreasonable, and tend to test your patience. Sometimes, they will call anyone and everyone who will listen to them vent about whatever is bothering them.   I chalk it all up to stress and as such, it's my job to rise above it.

So if it is our claim that we are "all of the above (fill in the blank)",it is also our job to consistently be "noblesse oblige" - regardless of good, bad, indifferent, right, wrong, stress or no stress times.  Not only will this make you a better person, it will add credibility to what you do and how much pride you take in your job and yourself no matter who tries to tell you or anyone else otherwise.

Enjoy your weekend!

Interesting information and soemthing we all need to strive for...my problem is that every once in a while I say soemthing declamatory and all of a sudden am noblesse permet.

You are so right! I've seen some agents add to the the stress ball right before closing. Be the chill pill! Be the professional that has seen more than one closing. I am hardly ever surprised at the last minute any more!

Gab - great advice to live by. I took 2 years of French in college and somehow seem to have missed learning this phrase, although I guess that was a long time ago:)

Gabrielle, thanks for informative post.  There is a Mardi Gras Krewe in this area which uses "Noblesse" in their name.  Now, I'll have to research the rest of their name as I suspect it is in keeping with the definition you have provided.
