Maniac Media Causes Widespread Panic!!

A thought occurred to me a few days ago.  Our media seems to have a tremendous influence over the vast majority of the American public.  Often times, the mere absence of our media would cause many cases of widespread panic to ripple by virtually unnoticed!

Let us take for example, the Y2K bug.  AAAHHHH!!!  Look at the chaos that followed that tragedy.  We had major bank software crash, Wall Street collapsed, rioting and looting were the order of the day, and life on our planet ceased to exist...right?

WRONG!!  Absolutely nothing happened.  I have a friend who bought a huge water bladder to store drinking water when the utility companies crashed, she bought a huge generator and large quantities of gasoline for when Edison crashed, she bought tons of food for when the agricultural system crashed.  The only problem was that none of them DID crash.

Now, before I get shot for being somewhat critical of our media, stop and consider for a moment what would have happened had the media kept from obsessing about it.  The people who prevented a huge problem still would have had the same amount of time to correct it, members of the public would not have gone out in droves to purchase things like bladders and MREs, and the majority of the American public would have gone about the last several months of 1999 without worrying that life was going to end.

Am I saying that we should be kept in the dark? No.  However, with the media obsessing over something for months and months, those of us who are easily swayed by the glossy faces that spew information on the 5 o'clock news are more than likely going to panic.

Now lets look at this whole housing market "crisis" that arose a few weeks ago.  Can you imagine how different the housing market would be today had the media not jumped on top of the mountain and proclaimed the Armageddon of real estate?  Sure, Countrywide is having issues.  Yeah, they kinda put themselves in some hot water.  Does that mean that the housing market needs to come to a crashing halt?  The media thinks so.

The housing market is very dependant on people buying and selling houses. Obviously.  It seems to me that all we need these days is to have some member of the media mention that something bad is coming, and the whole country puts itself into the crash position.  Ah the power of suggestion!

So what does that do?  It makes the situation WORSE.  Sometimes, I wish I were in the position to tell the media to SHUT UP already!

It's perception that drives the market, as we all know. Good news helps make folks feel better, and that leads to optimism, which is the perception that drives a good market. The reverse is well, the opposite. We had a lot of chicken little reporting for a few years before the market turned, but it did not start turning until Katrina hit. After that peple just didn't feel as good, and that was all it took.

Yep, we'd like the media to be more positive too, but for that we'd need something positive for them to dwell on. There hasn't been exactly a lot of that lately, unfortunately. But we're positive, and tomorrow is another good day coming.

Thanks for this one, it's appreciated.

Kind of makes you wish that Paris or Lindsay would do something stupid again or maybe we need one of those good old car chases down the 405 so the media can stop with the housing hype already and move on.  Can't blame them, they're just trying to sell commercials and since the regular news is so boring they sensationalize and spin the tidbits that they do have so it's got drama.

Some other sector will be the victim soon enough.

My local market is going really, really well, and yet the perception is still that things are dismal, because of what we hear on the news.  We can't speak louder than the national media, they just don't believe it.

I still spread sunshine.  Who knows, maybe they'll get it.

LOL!!  I will vote for another stupid Paris stunt too.  The laws of probability show that it can't be too long until a Hollywood starlet does something ridiculous!

Good Job Sarah!  Maybe if enough of us spread the word, the media machine can be defeated!

Well, I am sure that the media would call your close a fluke instead of what it actually was...a normal deal done in a normal way on a normal day.  Thanks for the comment Kelly!

Let's face it....if the media didnt put a negative spin on everything...they wouldnt sell any papers.Alot of People like to see others doing terribly,so their lives don't look so bad.Realtors need to put their foot down and stop giving them advertising $$$$..because that is what keeps them in business.

I absolutely do not care if someone shoots me down for slamming the media.

They love to spread panic. Panic+Consumer=Money.

Great post Jonathan! The market is driven by fear and greed and without the media we wouldn't have fear.
