We all know how it happens. The recreation room gets furnished with leftovers. We buy a beautiful new living room suite, so the perfectly serviceable old couch moves to the rec room. We build in a deluxe entertainment center, so the old stereo with the useless turntable but still good radio moves to the rec room. Aunt Millie moves to a retirement community in Florida, so her mismatched end tables move to the rec room. There is no place else to put the exercise bike, ping pong table, drying rack, box of books, bag of clothes, etc., so they move to the rec room. Once all this moving has drawn to a conclusion, we are left with a wreck room.

When preparing your home for sale, take a good hard look at that rec room. People are attracted to light, spacious, clean, comfortable rooms. Don't let your wreck room be a turn off. Discard, store, and slip cover. Make your rec room look like the comfortably inviting living space it was meant to be.

4 Comments on Do You Have a Rec Room, or a Wreck Room?

Good comment, I don't hesitate to suggest to sellers that they may want to seriously consider renting a storage space and hauling some things away for the time being.  I have seen decluttered homes sell much faster than the cookie cutter down the street that has not been decluttered.  The sellers need to hear it sometimes.

They need to hear it, but too bad they sometimes just don't understand how the clutter can hurt them.

I've seen this in garages.  They clean out the house to the best of their ability, but they pile the garage so full of stuff you can only open the door.  I'm sorry, but if your garage is full of junk, you're still telling people that their isn't enough room in the hosue.

Wreck rooms and garages are the most ignored when it comes to prepping a house for sale.  Good post.

I've been in rec rooms which were truly wrecks. But to the owners it was their comfort zone.
