Each year, PARADE magazine conducts a survey of thousands of American workers to illustrate the current state of our economy. Here are some results from this year's annual survey:

  • Less unemployment. With approximately 15 million people out of work last fall, the national average unemployment rate peaked at 10.1 percent in October 2009. But by January 2010, unemployment improved to 9.7 percent.
  • Education is up. In order to advance in their current careers, to switch to a new career or to enhance their job prospects, millions of people are heading back to school.
  • Some industries are on the rise. Education and health care careers are actually growing; in fact, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, about 320,000 jobs in these industries were added in the past year.
