Mr. Potato Head

I'm pretty absent-minded.  More so than most people.  Often, when I'm watching television, and a commercial comes on, I forget what program I'm watching.

Now, maybe that says more about the quality of the television programming I'm watching, but I don't think so.

uh... what were we talking about again...?  Oh, right... absent-minded!  (Sorry).

So, this morning, it should come as no surprise to anyone who knows me, that I managed to leave the house without my wallet.  This is a truly disconcerting feeling.  Right up there with that dream... you know the one... you're at school... you have a report due, and you haven't done any of the research, let alone the paper.  The teacher calls you to the front of the class to read your report, and you hesitantly make you way up there... only to find out that you're standing in front of the class in your underwear, and everyone is pointing and laughing.

Yeah... that kind of disconcerting, wandering through the day without your wallet... no license (drive carefully), no RE ID Card, No credit card to fill up at the gas station, fortunately i carry my money in a money clip in my front pocket... uh, oh... no cash AND no ATM card (it's in my wallet)...arrrgghh..

All of this comes about because we have a change in seasons... it's suddenly gotten cold, and last night, when we went out to dinner, I pulled out my fall windbreaker... and put my wallet in the inside breast pocket.  And that's where my wallet sits at this moment... in my windbreaker, hanging in the hall closet... because this morning, when I left the house, it was nice and warm and I didn't need my windbreaker.

Doy!!  Uh, so when changing clothing for the season... or ladies, when changing purses... as Carl Maulden used to say (man, am I dating myself here!)... "Don't leave home without it".

When I leave the house I check my purse and make sure I have 5 things. Phone, wallet, checkbook, reading glasses ... and I can't remember the 5th item. Darn you Alan! Oh, yeah, keys.

It can happen to the best of us Alan. You're lucky that this wasn't the day that you got randomly pulled over by a cop in a snarky mood.

Alan, I forget my Cell phone in the charger about once a month, but never my wallet...I have a teenager that "needs money" everyday so my wallet gets used everyday.

Home is where the hearth is.

Cynthia - did you remember the keys, too?

Malcolm - I know... I was driving under the speed limit all day.

Susan - I want to believe.

myJennifer - that's almost the same checklist I use (except for the boytoy part).... what shade?

Steve - I have walked out of the house sooooooo many times without my phone, that it's become a "house joke"... but I rarely make it past the curb... and when I walk back to the house, my wife often says simply, from the kitchen table... "forget your phone"?

Uh oh...I remember those Carl Maulden commercials.  Hey...I didn't need to be reminded of age!  It's bad enough I forget what I did with my cell phone!  UGH!

I forgot my wallet once this year, remembered 15 miles into the 20 mile trip to the office.  A strange feeling, off all day... luckily enough quarters in the desk drawer to buy lunch, and didn't need gas for the car!

Alan, We must be related.  I'm SO absent minded, it's scary.  I tend to always forget something.  Drives me nuts!  I continually lose my credit card, only to find it a week after stopping that card and ordering a new one.  GAWD.  Glad to know I'm not alone!

Jack - I used to lock my keys in the car all the time... NOW, I never lock the door, without first checking to make sure I have the keys in my hands.

Elizabeth - I've never lost a card... an entire wallet, yes... but not a single card.  (and the wallet showed up 4 years later!!.... but that's another story).

Before I leave home, I kind of do a police-style pat-down. Pat front pockets--keys, wallet (long story), and other things that should be there. Back pockets--check book. Shirt pocket--business cards, phone (again, long story). So I've built in this one habit, and if I discover anything missing (which does occur--same as you--with a change in clothes, seasons, etc.), I usually catch it.

I once worked with a woman (back a number of years ago)--she was in her 30s and very attractive. Our office was in Northern Virginia. For some reason she had to drive to New Jersey--about 200 miles, on toll roads, and so on. She'd forgotten her purse. She managed to drive all the way up and all the way back just talking her way through toll booths and whatever else she needed where money was expected. Quite a feat, and something I wouldn't even think of attempting!

Don - I do the morning pat-down, too.  And usually on the way from the front-door to the car, is where I notice the phone is missing.
