Porcelain Tile that looks like hardwood. Yes, that’s right.

Porcelain tile that looks like hardwood westchesterPorcelain Tile that looks like hardwood. Yes, that’s right. Have you ever wanted hardwood, but felt it wasn’t right since you wanted something waterproof? This comes up often when we are looking at kitchens or powder rooms or entryways. My customers feel conflicted because they have hardwood in the rest of their home and they want to continue this look. But, they are concerned about water. What if we get the floors wet? What if something spills or leaks or floods?

tile that looks like hardwood westchesterWell I’ve got the perfect solution for that. It’s porcelain tile that looks like hardwood. It is very fashion forward so it looks so stylish. But, it’s tile so it’s waterproof. It’s laid in a staggered fashion just like hardwood and grout lines are very tight (just like a marble) so it looks sleek and clean.

What do you think?

I think that's great....in this area, strip oak is $6/s.f. installed.....not prefinished....three coats....one quick coat and two more with sanding in between.....tile averages $7.50 installed....but obviously there are some very expensive tiles....my flooring people are flooring America in franklin...I'll have to ask him about this product....it must be expensive.....it looks like the rectangular blocks are staggered so it looks like wide boards, not strip oak????

Debbie - Now you're talking my language (you know how I prefer tile over hardwood).  Although I have heard of this product, I've never seen it installed (just seen it in magazines and catalogs).  Are the grout lines really noticeable?

Silvia - Yes, it's fairly new - within the last year or two it's started to gain in popularity.  But, it's still a novelty and that's what makes it so cool.

Debra - I know, I think it's so cool, too.

Tish - yes, it really is great.  Now, I'm seeing it more often so prices are decreasing, too.

Barbara - Here in Mid Atlantic/New England, it's usually less expensive to do hardwood than tile.  (although this really depends on whether you have plywood subfloor or cement but in general tile is more expensive due to the labor.  This tile tends to be more expensive...but, I recently found some that are less expensive.  Regarding the look, the are longer than they appear in these pictures.  The ones I was installing were 5" wide x 26".  The new ones I found (which I think look really nice - maybe even nicer) are 24" in length and come 3 different widths:  4" or 6" or 8".  You can even mix them up which also looks cool.

Donne - it looks super cool.  I need to get some pictures of our work.  Grout lines are done really thin - just like marble is.  You're not supposed ro notice the grout lines in either case.

Debbie....I bet it looks great.....and I can picture it with the thin grout line like marble....from a distance, it could have the look of a prefinished wood floor with grooves???  they never mud set tile here....it's too expensive....it's plywood with mastic......

Cool information!  Haven't seen it around here, but flooring advances continue to surprise!  Often with the better lineoleum made to look like ceramic tile, you've got to touch it to know it's not.

Barbara - Exactly!

Susan - Yes, I think it would be an excellent choice - no worries w/ the water nor expansion and contraction w/ the humidity

Jay - Yes, I know, I've done that a few times, too.

Bliz - Yes.  And, yes, what you're referring to is luxury vinyl.  It can be made to look like tile or hardwood.  The better versions look amazing with registered embossing - looks real graining and real grout lines.  I had some fo that in my office for a while and didn't even realize it was fake till I touched it.

I'm so glad you wrote this.! I'm one of those who would love hardwood in my kitchen and powder room, but was worried about the water as well.  And, this solution seems as though the dirt wouldn't show like white or dark tile floors!

Hi Debbie. I took a look at tile that had the look and feel (I was very surprised about the feel) of hardwood, and am seriously considering it for a laundry room/mudroom area. It would undoubtedly be better than real wood in an area where moisture is prevalent. I also like having the option of tile that doesn't look like traditional tile.  Thanks for your expert advice.
