Naples is known for its sandy beaches on the Gulf of Mexico, its warm winters, challenging golf courses, fine arts, performing arts, sophisticated shopping and dining.

That's nice, right?

But there is only one place on the planet Earth where you can go and experience the Everglades!

Learing about the Everglades is important on so many levels.

The more we learn about our fragile environment the more we want to keep it around for our grandkids.

This past Saturday

More than 1,000 visitors got a free chance to explore estuaries surrounding Naples on Saturday during the National Estuaries Day celebration at the Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve.

Boat rides and kayak tours took participants out among the mangroves as other visitors explored guided nature walks and the facility’s Environmental Learning Center.

The research facility manages 110,000 acres of coastline landscape opens its doors to the public for free during the annual event, which began in 1988.

It coincides with similar events at 27 national estuarine research reserves nationwide on the last Saturday in September.

Jim, your everglades, like our marshes are natures filtering systems... we destroy them at our long term peril.

I have not been to the Everglades in years - and last trip we could not kayak or canoe due to high winds.

Chris-You are right and we've got to turn that attitude around or else!

Carol-You've just got to come back.  Now they have a GPS Map of the 10,000 Islands for kayaks and canoes so you can enjoy the beauty of Mother Nature without getting lost!
