Near-naked butts are fine, but the smoking kind are now off limits at almost all San Diego beaches.

The most recent prohibition against smoking on beaches comes from San Diego's northernmost city, Oceanside. Though tickets are not currently being issued there, signs will be going up after Labor Day advising all of the ban on smoking at Oceanside beaches.  This recent legislation came after 9000 residents responded last year to city survey and cam out in support of the smoking ban.

It seems many don't like the idea--or reality--of their local beaches being used as an ashtray.

Oceanside joins the cities of San Diego, El Cajon, National City, Imperial Beach, Del Mar and Solana Beach in prohibiting smoking in their parks and/or at their beaches.

Encinitas has yet to ban smoking at its beaches--and smoking is currently allowed at the State Beach in South Carlsbad.

The only problem I see with all this is that other rights may also be on the line. It is getting pretty ridiculous. With all the trash people strewn around, cigarette butts should be least of their worries. I wonder when wearing cologne will be banned because someone may not like the fragrance. It is getting to be a very dangerous world we live in. What other person things do people do that irritates someone.

Roberta - How interesting - wonder if this is a sign of things to come. I tried emailing you last week and it "failed" if you get a chance sometime maybe you can email me sometime at your convenience. Thanks.

I think San Diego's No Butts On The Beach idea is a great one.  But, I'm sure there are a lot of smokers who would disagree.

Thanks for verifying this.  I was telling one of my girlfriends that she needs to warn her MIL that she cannot smoke on the beach this weekend when we are up there.  She said when she was just down at Mission Beach two weeks ago people were smoking all around.  How do they enforce this?  Is it up to the lifeguards?  The lifeguards are extremely diligent in making sure dogs stay off the beach during non -doggy hours, do they have to get people off the beach who are smoking too?  I am just curious because every other time we were up there (PB) since the ban, no one was smoking.

William: You are right, of course. But at least in democracies, don't the "squeaky wheels" get the grease? I mean, 9000 people voiced an opinion in Oceanside and the ban was implemented.

Cyndee: Hmmm....via Active Rain or my website?  I will be in touch!

Marlene: I agree. I agree.

Renee: I think enforcement is an issue--and it certainly shouldn't be done by lifeguards. They need to stay alert to real dangers on the shore and in the water. I would prefer to see enforced bans on littering, whether from trash or butts.
