Whew!  The Canned Pumpkin Shortage is Officially Over.

I knew you were worried so I wanted to get the word out right away.

Seriously folks, Thanksgiving is right around the corner and that means pumpkin bread, pumpkin bars, pumpkin trifle, pumpkin soup, pumpkin ice cream, pumpkin cake, pumpkin rolls, pumpkin roulade, pumpkin mousse, pumpkin french toast, pumpkin ravioli, pumpkin cookies, pumpkin flan, pumpkin cheesecake, pumpkin doughnuts and, of course, PUMPKIN PIE.

Although I was blissfully unaware, it seems that we have been suffering from a canned pumpkin shortage for over a year!

Apparently Nestle, which accounts for about 85% of all canned pumpkin sales in the United States, irritated Mother Nature.

According to the Associated Press, "  . . . a farm in Morton, Ill. — the source of nearly all its (Nestle) pumpkins — received about double the typical rainfall last year. Tractors sat mired in muck and much of the crop rotted in the fields. Canned pumpkin was gone from the shelves as early as Thanksgiving in some places. On eBay, cans of pumpkin went for $6 or $7 apiece, several times the normal price, as supplies dwindled."

But, with early planting, good weather and about a third of the crop in, Nestle has declared the pumpkin shortage officially over.  Of course the price per can is going up about 20¢ per can . . . .

Still, I can rest easy now.

LOL.. Cute post!  I love pumpkin EVERYTHING.  I never buy the canned stuff.  I usually pick a nice pumpkin, bring it home, cut it up, boil it down and puree it with pumpkin pie spice.  I bake everything imaginable with it... I absolutely love it.  Although only in my kitchen, it takes me "away" from big city living .. temporarily :)

Take care & God Bless!

I have been searching all over for canned pumpkin...we have an older german shepherd and the vet suggested adding it to her diet.  Just two days ago, I bought up all Harris Teeter had on their shelves - I was thrilled to finally find it!  Thanks for solving the mystery.

Anytime Susan, anytime.  Actually the article said that one of the reasons why it was in short supply is that it has become a 'super food' and folks are starting to eat it year round for its great nutritional value.  Best to your puppy.

Michael--What a story!  How is it that this was not widely known??  Now that I know there was a shortage, I am craving a piece of pie or at the very least a pumpkin doughnut!!  And then to learn from Susan that her vet is recommending pumpkinfor her dog!!  Amazing. I love squash and I would guess pumpkin is in the same family.  And this just goes to show that you can blog about any topic and be very appreciated!  Thanks Michael!!

Pat = Thank you for one more item to add to my pumpkin list - doughnuts.  We do a baked pumpkin stuffed with three kinds of cheeses that is to die for.  In fact, I think I'll post the recipie in a few weeks.  Nice to be appreciated . . .
