Does having my picture on my sign make me vain?

By
Real Estate Agent with Coldwell Banker Gundaker-St. Louis, MO

This morning I was listening to a local radio show and they were talking about how one of the DJ's had recently purchased a home.  When the DJ pulled up with the realtor in front of the house she asked the realtor why her picture wasn't on the sign.  The realtor replied she didn't want her picture on the sign because she felt the realtors who did this are vain.

I don't think having your photo on your sign makes you vain, it’s more marketing than anything.

When people have a face with the name, they tend to remember it better.  A name is only a name… a face with a name goes a lot further.  And realtors do work for their money, don’t we?

If you are the seller, would you rather your agent take the call rather than just anyone who answers the phone at the office?  They are the person who probably knows your home the best.

One final note: We are realtors ladies and gents, it’s not a beauty pageant.  Make sure that photo on the sign, on your business card or wherever you have decided to plaster your beautiful mug actually looks like you.  You don’t want someone doing a double or triple take and completely confused because the photo you are using is one from 10-20 years ago.  I’m sure you looked terrific back then, (and you do now too!) use a current photo… it’ll serve you best in your business.

Hmmm. I believe this question has been answered before by Ms. DeLong out in Washington (or is it Michigan? Or maybe Illinois? I forget, but I digress), wrapped in a different form, but the same question nonetheless.

It seems to me that agents who place their mug shots on a for sale sign are trying to sell themselves and the home, when the focus of the sign should be the home itself. Not so much a matter of vanity, but perhaps a bit of ego and self-promotion...

I don't have a photo on my card or my signs- it just feels cheesy to me but I'm not bothered by others who do so more power to you if it helps with your branding.

Hi Linda-

Having ones photo on the sign is more popular in some areas than others, but I do think that it gives prospective Buyers one look at your cheerful face and tells them that you look friendly enough to talk to!

Jim and Linda...I do not have my photo on my signs, but I don't think your vain if you do.  I do have it on my business cards. I laughed about the double-take part, as we were in the airport this summer, and the security lady did a double take on my driver's license.  I laughed out loud and said, "YES, it's me...it has been about 14 years since I had that picture taken. I've just renewed it online."  Not that I've changed that much!!! :)

Jim and Linda: As agents we embody the business, hence our faces coupled with our services are our brands. Using your face in your business is a no brainer. I'm in total agreement with you. Let the naysayers be damned. Additionally, casting espersions on people you haven't met by saying they are vain is tacky and shallow. It says more about the accuser than the object of their rancor. There's no simpler or better way to differentiate yourself.
