"There is far more danger in public than in private monopoly, for when government goes into business it can always shift its losses to the taxpayer."                                                          Thomas Edison

That was said in the early 1900's when the public (read that government, or my word "gubment") was not so much involved in taking over business as it is today!

When gubment takes over the auto industry, or banking, or school loans, or mortgages, or investment banking, or "health" care, or WHATEVER the business, it is ALWAYS on the backs of the taxpayers.

Gubment produces nothing!  It earns interest on nothing.  It grows nothing.  Anything, that is anything, it derives in any fashion, is from the taxpayers from whom it must take the money.

Loss is the common measure of gubment control of anything.  Its loss, however, as Mr. Edison suggests, is hidden in fiscal policy.  And in the end it doesn't work.

Who learned that lesson the hard way? One of the biggest BIG government people in history.  The most notable fascist of all - Adoph Hitler.

P.s.  Conservatives are NEVER fascists, in any regard.  And those who throw that charge around are basically and fundamentally uninformed.  As usual...

And that is the reason that those on TVA are having to pay for the clean-up when the dam broke in East TN. They (the government)said that rates would not go up to pay for the millions it will cost to clean up - yeah right. Funny how there is this "fuel surcharge" tax on the bill now...

On a side note, since I'm still on my soap box, maybe the word should be gooberment not gubment. Same mentality as a goober (southern slang for peanut) just incase you didn't know...

Love it Michael!  I know about dems goobers (you can take the word "dems" any way you wish)...  I say gubment because that is how most of the people who depend on it for a meager, unproductive life style pronouce it.

By the way, the TVA has cost me, and every American, every year since its inception...

It is so true.  The more government gets involved with business, the more it falls back on us as taxpayers.  I do not think ever in the history of our country have I felt so much under strain as a self employed person since Obama came into office.  I hope, as many Americans do, that November will be a new awakening for our country.

Michael D. - it is the self employed who are not counted in most of the statistics of unemployment or business failures.  And they will be hit really big with the coming tax increase on the "rich."

Jay - The sad truth is that regardless of the outcome of the coming election, the country's problems will see little impact.  Have you noticed that the majority of incumbents are being returned to office?  Until that changes in a dramatic way, we'll have lots of noise and few meaningful changes.

I do have to agree with John on the incumbents.  We can't get rid of them all, but a good amount of them will help.. More the better.

John - hopefully a big message can be sent and it can be the start of something big.  If this election doesn't clean them out, 2012 might, along with the Small Kahuna.

William - I will go with that.  The more the merrier, although the sadness to date won't be taken away!

Post Office.  Amtrak.  Fannie Mae.  Freddie Mac.  Ginnie Mae.  Sixth time must be the charm...

Damon - the only thing I can think of that the gubment can do better than the private sector (read that, the market) would be national defense.  The rest?  Well...

Lane - the list may be a bit longer than that!  But don't hope for the sixth thing being any more charming.

Jay,

Not only does government have no experience in running a business, it is famous for losing money. :)

Of course it is Steve, because there are millions, if not billions, of transactions that happen voluntarily in any given marketplace, and there is no way a desk jockey bureaucrat can handle it all efficiently or at all.

And thanks for the feature!

Jay, those are just the "private businesses" the government has run that I could think of off the top of my head...

Lane - Do you know why they took over the postal service and won't allow anyone but the USPS to deliver first class mail?  To protect the Pony Express!  That's why Fedex cannot deliver a letter, unless its inside one of their packages or bags!
