For the past couple of week the Washington Post and my local talk radio station, WTOP, have been running ads for a big motivational business seminar to be held at the Verizon Center in October called "Get Motivated."
I know that many people find this type of event to be extremely worthwhile. I am a big believer in understanding what motivates YOU and doing those things that will make you personally successful.
That said, the ads they are running confound me. They have some pretty big deal people speaking--but they are all men. Not a woman among them. As for racial diversity, they included Colin Powell. Given how little that represents our workforce, I am confused.
Is it really going to be possible to fill the Verizon Center (our big, go-to venue) with white men?
I am sure that we could all learn a lot from this seminar given the very high quality of speakers. The ads show the following speakers:
- Zig Ziglar
- General Colin Powell
- Dan Rather
- Terry Bradshaw
- Steve Forbes
- Rudy Giuliani
- Rick Belluzzo
But, really, you could not find an important woman? Not anyone who could motivate and speak about strong leadership practices?
It is a little thing, in the grand scheme of world problems, but I thought we had gotten past the point in our history where we only acknowledged men as leaders and motivators.
It is probably not too late to add some really great female speakers...
