I just returned from visiting with an elderly woman who recognizes that she needs to sell her property but hasn't yet because she is overwhelmed by the very thought of moving.  As we sat and talked for a couple of hours, I really got to know her and the challenges she faces every day.  I too would be overwhelmed... and frustrated for that matter. 

She knew some of the basics in preparing a property for today's market expectations so she was packing a little at a time.  Her endeavors ended when she couldn't move the box once it was packed.  So there it sat, in the front entrance, for 3 YEARS! In addition, there were other (to me) "simple" things that needed to be done around the property that would only take a couple of minutes to do and here she is having to live with them.  They are little things but many little things can add up.  I can't imagine how frustrating it must be to see simple tasks that need attention but still not be able to do them. (Especially since growing older, where's the reward?)

In addition to being a REALTOR, I am a Certified Staging Professional.  I organize and pack a lot and I've always done my own home improvements so there are many tasks I think are easy to do but now see that I take it for granted that everyone can do them.  After speaking with "Ann", it is apparent to me that I could very easily help her in little ways that can make a big difference in helping her.

So tomorrow, I will be developing a "seniors" package including additional services specifically to solve some of the challenges seniors have to face when preparing their properties for sale.

Good for you Tina. Having a visit like this really makes one stop and see how many things we take for granted on a daily basis. I am glad "Ann" has someone like you that can see her needs and can take action in helping her get them done!

Hi Tina,

Good for you, as many of our communities are "greying", getting to know and find local solutions for age related real estate issues is becoming a bigger and bigger opportunity and challenge.

Over the past few years we have spend many hours on collecting, sourcing and preparing a few senior specific information and assistance resources, the rewards are amazing.

You may find that completing the SRES course (live or on line) offered by Rebac or the CSA course (not sure who offers it in the USA) will be of your personal as well as your clients benefit.

by 2012 thousands of boomers all over North America are reaching retirement age daily......... it is a huge market, it is also a huge set of issues, that most governments have not prepared for adequately.
