Spam Is Driving Me Crazy!!

spam

I've been in business for a few years now and every year I get more and more emails trying to sell me all kinds of stuff from web sites, leads, mortgages, computers, post card printing, business cards, commission advances, workshops, calendars, etc to property located out of my area.  This list goes on and on.  I don't care about all that stuff along with some condo in Florida.

It seems that I spend half of my day just deleting junk.  I went on vacation for 10 days and my box was so full that I couldn't get more mail in it.  The problem is that if you ask them to remove you then they realize that it is a good address and sell it to someone else.   It is easier just to delete it.

Fortunately I use Outlook which will allow me to create a rule to automatically send it to the spam or delete file.  Still it seems to come through.  There has to be some relief for all this.

Any ideas?

I changed my email.. notified my MLS, clients, and co-workers, and anyone else who i thought should have it.  Also, it gives you another reason to contact all your past clients that you have not talked to in a while.

Daniel:  Great idea except that my email is my brand.  Ray@RayPerry.com.  I think that changing the email will do more harm to my business than it would help by dealing with spam..

Daniel:  I do that when I respond to some things, however most of the stuff I get comes from RE related vendors.  They must get my email from my web site.  I hate to change that.  I simply label it as junk and keep emptying out my trash.

I started using Gmail about two months ago, and it seems to catch pretty much all of the spam messages.  You can set it up to send/receive using your current email address.  My email is also part of my brand, and I have had the same address for about 10 years.  So far, this has saved me TONS of time.  Yahoo may even be better, as this is what my wife uses.  It seems easier for sorting emails.  Good luck either way!

Jason:

I just wish that there was a way to put some real teeth in the current laws against spam.  There's so much of it that it is waisting all of our time.  The filters work but sometimes the work too well.  I've lost clients in some of the filters.  Some mail we want such as sent to all of the agents in the company.  Some we can do without.  It's hard for some of the services to filter what is necessary and leave the stuff we want.

I agree wholeheartedly with you on this.  It is so extreme now - I receive probably 200-300 daily, at least.  Gmail just sticks them in another folder, and I periodically delete the whole thing.
