My Brother and RLS

My brother, Dan, has been coping with the pain of Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS) since 1974. RLS has been the worst thing he has ever had to deal with. The sleepless nights, pain and anxiety had taken total control of his life.  Although he enjoyed being active, his legs limited him to doing most things.   Dan said, “Within 2 years I will be completely crippled, due to my RLS”. 

What is RLS?

Relentlessly, RLS causes recurring physical and mental torment due to restless, creepy feelings and/or pain in the legs.  This causes compulsive leg movements, floor pacing, leg kicking, twitching, and tossing and turning in bed.  Although it strikes primarily at bedtime, it can also strike in the afternoon or early evening, intruding on your activities and causing embarrassment.

Dan had seen many doctors, and had numerous tests done.  I traveled to the Cleveland Clinic with him last year searching for help of any kind with his legs.  When Dan would visit me he would always be up most of the night with RLS.   A few years ago, he started taking the drug Requip.   The medication gave him some relief, although the side effects were awful and a couple of times life threatening, he continued to take Requip as it provided some temporary relief.

Around the first of this year, Dan’s good friends Misti and Richard Kilgore were very concerned about Dan’s health as was his family.  Misti hearing Dan say that within two years RLS may cripple him, she started researching as much material on RLS as she could find on this disease. 

Then one day she found an insert from a book, “The Restless Leg Syndrome Cured Forever” by Markus Bloom.    To Misti’s surprise it listed all of Dan’s symptoms.  They ordered the E-book.  After reading the 110 pages, Dan was excited and decided to take the 15 day challenge. This was on Tuesday, May 11, 2010.

The first couple of days he started to notice a little change, third and fourth day feeling a little better.  On May 15^th, day five of “all dairy products”, Dan stopped taking Requip.   After following the dairy free diet for seven days he says, “I slept all night, for the first time since 1974”.   By eliminating dairy all together, it has made a dramatic change in his life.  Bloom says “RLS is not a medical condition, but a reaction to milk and dairy products”.

I am so proud of my brother, by following this dairy free diet he and his friend Richard have both lost weight and are feeling great.   Dan will be 77 in October and is enjoying life now more than ever, playing golf, going to the gym, working in the yard and most of all being able to go to bed and sleep all night. 

This may not help everyone with RLS but, it has definitely  helped my brother.  He reads all product labels, and if a product has one of the bad ingredients that was provided in the book, he does not buy it.  Dan does not eat or drink anything that has dairy …  it has changed my brother’s life.
