FINAL ROLL-OUT FOR DISCOVERY is so FINAL.

Inspired by Gary Woltal's post this a.m., Wordless Wednesday ~ Final Discovery Rollout For November Launch, Gary brings a deep sadness to my morning.

GIVING UP ISN'T NATURAL FOR AMERICANS.  We, the United States of America, are giving up our supremacy in space exploration to other countries.  Of course, we'll probably be funding a big chunk of what other countries will be doing, we seem to fund just about anything and everything that folks want to do, but we will no longer be in the lead and will no longer receive the great benefits of space exploration.  I'm not talking about financial benefits.  I'm talking about benefits to the soul for A JOB WELL DONE!

I STILL DON'T UNDERSTAND JUST GIVING UP!  Were we too proud?  Were we too smug?  I don't believe so.

  • Proud? YES!
  • Smug?  NO!

Not smug when we shared the benefits and spotlight with brave souls of other countries.  Yes, we led and that is a comfortable role for Americans.

My sadness turned to anger when I realized that, by the stroke of a Presidential pen, the U.S. will no longer be in the lead for space exploration.  Future generations of U.S. youngsters who dream of space exploration of galazies and planets and moons will have to settle for being followers and not the leaders.

Being in second, or third, or . . . . position is not a comfortable place for many Americans, especially those of us who who heard the "beep-beep" of Sputnik and watched while Americans raised the American flag on the moon.

I'll watch the November FINAL launch of Discovery with deep sadness.

Lenn,

You have struck a chord. I don't mind second place, when we give it what we've got.

But, it seems like we quit and whimper off the court....

Lenn, this is sad, but it comes as no surprise because it is just more example of what this administration is all about.

Well hopefully what this administration has done and will do while still in office will stir up the American Public to a frenzie to take America back!

Michael.  Thank you!

Gary.  NASA Headquarters is in my market area.

Dorie.  Invention and creativity cannot thrive in those atmospheres.

Missy.  I believe that program survived.

Richard.  I was around and remember.  I remember the inspiration it gave our nation to work hard, invest and succeed in space.  A formula that still works, if permitted to thrive.

Nicholas.  It's about power.  It won't succeed but will cost all of us a bloody fortune to dismantle what is being done.

Christine.  THAT feeling is shared by all.

Mike.  You state it well.

Thank you Nicholas.

George.  Indeed it is.

Evelyn.  Hope isn't going to do it.  Voting them out will be a new beginning.

Lenn, not only am I sad I am outraged about how certain administrations are able to steer our country in the wrong direction. Four years can set back our country twenty years. Science, Research and Education are key anyway I just wanted to comment not to rant.....

Endra.  Rant away.  I'm ranting and I'm outraged and have been since our space program was wiped out with the strke of a pen.

While I'm not sad to see the shuttle program end (it was around WAY longer than expected), it is a shame that there isn't a back-up ready to go.  But then, we do have a little money trouble.  Now, if we could cut the JUNK in the budget as easily, then maybe we could have some change left over for space exploration again.

Lenn, I have always enjoyed and followed the space program.  Since my move to Huntsville I actually feel as though I've been a part of it.  NASA plays a huge economic role here.  When Wernher von Braun brought his team here back in the 60's it put Huntsville on the map.  Part of the reason I moved to Huntsville was because my wife accepted an opportunity to work for NASA.  Lot's of people here work for NASA...no big deal but up north...Chicago...well it's bragging rights up there.  Anyway, my thought...my hope...is that this current administration will be going away in a couple of years and perhaps we will once again return to the space program as leaders...as explorers...as pioneers...as we once were.

Lane.  Give me the delete pen and I'll find enough pork, junk, crony pay-offs, graph, etc. to fund NASA fully.

Nick.  It's merely a step in the attempt to make the U.S.  a second rate country with compliant, ambitionless, pridless citizens.  Soon, hopefully, they will be gone.

I for one am VERY HAPPY there will be no more time wasted on space exploration.  Now NASA will finally, and I mean FINALLY, have the time to focus on and promote the wonderful contributions of Islam to the world and make them finally feel good about themselves and their new-found recognition.

Just trying to be patriotic and follow the lead of our wonderful "president" ...

Jay.  When I heard that directive from the State Department, there was no longer any denying the obvious.

Seems like ever since the shuttle program started in the early 1980s that NASA's seemed to be without a mission.  Before we had a mission to make it to the moon - did that in 1969.  Then a mission to create a space station - did that with Skylab. Then to get routine missions into space - did that with the Shuttle.  What is the mission now? There hasn't been one in about 20 years.

Our mission, aa I see it is to be an integral part of our space exploration and national defense planning and implementation.

The NATIONAL DEFENSE is probably the most important.

Lenn, I probably shouldn't pursue this because it'll only raise my blood pressure, but where do I go to read about the subject matter of your referrence to Jay Markanich's comment #22?

Lenn,I saw Gary's post and I too was sad!  I remember the President setting the goal, and American rising to the occasion.  We saw Americans walk on the moon!!!  We've become a country focused on instant gratification, rather than striving for long term goals.

Lane.  Oh my goodness.  Wouldn't I love to be in charge of the veto pen or the line item veto pen.

Wallace.  I remember the "beep-beep" of Sputnik only too well.

Laura.  The long term goal now is to make everyone equal in every way by spreading the wealth.
