FINAL ROLL-OUT FOR DISCOVERY is so FINAL.
Inspired by Gary Woltal's post this a.m., Wordless Wednesday ~ Final Discovery Rollout For November Launch, Gary brings a deep sadness to my morning.
GIVING UP ISN'T NATURAL FOR AMERICANS. We, the United States of America, are giving up our supremacy in space exploration to other countries. Of course, we'll probably be funding a big chunk of what other countries will be doing, we seem to fund just about anything and everything that folks want to do, but we will no longer be in the lead and will no longer receive the great benefits of space exploration. I'm not talking about financial benefits. I'm talking about benefits to the soul for A JOB WELL DONE!
I STILL DON'T UNDERSTAND JUST GIVING UP! Were we too proud? Were we too smug? I don't believe so.
- Proud? YES!
- Smug? NO!
Not smug when we shared the benefits and spotlight with brave souls of other countries. Yes, we led and that is a comfortable role for Americans.
My sadness turned to anger when I realized that, by the stroke of a Presidential pen, the U.S. will no longer be in the lead for space exploration. Future generations of U.S. youngsters who dream of space exploration of galazies and planets and moons will have to settle for being followers and not the leaders.
Being in second, or third, or . . . . position is not a comfortable place for many Americans, especially those of us who who heard the "beep-beep" of Sputnik and watched while Americans raised the American flag on the moon.
I'll watch the November FINAL launch of Discovery with deep sadness.
