Rhode Island Statewide MLS recently implemented new security measures for gaining access to the MLS. All agents have received "security tokens" that generate a one time password EACH time you log on to MLS.
Here's why Statewide MLS says we needed the change:
"State-Wide MLS identified the need to implement a security initiative designed to provide optimum protection for YOUR valuable MLS and consumer data. As data and identity theft has become a growing concern nationwide, reliance on usernames and passwords as the sole form of user authentication is no longer an option. Security analysts estimate that between 10 to 25 percent of user logins to an MLS are NOT legitimate dues-paying Members. SAFEMLS® authenticators provide the necessary security to protect the MLS data and your client’s personal and financial information, while still offering the flexibility and convenience for the truly mobile MLS Member.
SAFEMLS® authenticators generate one-time passwords with the simple touch of a button. Once a password is used, it can not be used to log in again, thus significantly reducing the risk of shared passwords. State-Wide MLS is confident that the SAFEMLS® solution is an important step to protecting the valuable data and information that is vital to our MLS Members."
Although I first thought this was going to be a huge inconvenience I have actually found it to be not such a big deal. The first time I forgot my "token" I simply decided to attach it to my keyring - problem solved. I have also gained some peace of mind (even though I wasn't quite worried before) that the information I store on MLS is in fact safe and will not be viewed by others. Keep an eye out...you'll probably see the same security initiatives coming to your local MLS!!!
