The Giant Dipper roller coaster
in Belmont Park, Mission Beach

Not too far from your condominium in Mission Valley is Mission Beach. Mission Beach and its southern cousin, Ocean Beach, are San Diego's version of Berkeley, California. There are arts... crafts... weed... restaurants... weed... fishing.... boating... weed... the boardwalk... weed...  people stuck in a late '60s/early '70s time warp... weed... (Don't worry. They are proud of their communities.)

One of the two original oceanfront roller coasters on the West Coast that still survives is in Mission Beach's Belmont Park, and it's a lot of fun. It's the Giant Dipper:

http://www.missionvalleycondos.info

The Giant Dipper opened on July 4, 1925, and cost $150,000 to build. Not sure what that would be in today's dollars, but in 1990, it cost $2.1 million to renovate and re-open after being in disrepair for several years.

http://www.missionvalleycondos.infoA ride along its 2,600-ft track takes 1 minute and 45 seconds, with the steepest drop being 73 feet. This is an old wooden roller coaster, so it's not the drop that gets you, it's those quick drops and sharp curves, agonizingly jerky, as I'm told all good roller coasters should be.

When I came to San Diego in 1988, rides were a mere 50¢. Today the same ride costs $6.00. Not sure how they are doing in this economy since I think $6.00 for 1 minute and 45 seconds seems kind of steep (pun intended). But it is something you should experience at least once, and besides, you can't live in San Diego without saying you've ridden the Giant Dipper, and you can't go home after visitng without saying the same.

Hi Jim!  I can't remember the last time I was on a roller coaster......I think it was at Six Flags Over Georgia maybe 10 years ago?  I wonder if I would enjoy the ride as much as I used to.  I suppose if I visit San Diego I will have to ride the Giant Dipper.....but you will have to ride it with me!

Jim,

I'm still amazed at the effort that companies put into keeping these wooden roller coasters in tip-top shape.

Jim, I always loved Roller Coaster Rides and that drop and feeling like the floor went out under you and you are free floating until it hits bottom. Now I would worry about the disrepair of the equipment, what will it do to my heart....on and on, not counting the money to spend at venues like this just to scare me:))

Hey Jim, how interesting.  50 cents in 1988 sounds cheap, but I'm used to amusement parks where they charge an entrance fee which covers all the rides, and then the individual rides are free.

Old wooden roller coasters are my favorites.  This one looks like just the type of ride I'd enjoy.  Nice post, Jim!

Ann – I’ll be happy to take you over there, but you and my husband will have to ride together. Roller coasters, especially this one, are in my past I’m afraid.

Roger – Personally, I think chocolate is better. LOL

Steve – They have to. Otherwise, an accident would result in a really nice lawsuit.

Endre – I’ve never really been a fan of roller coasters although I think my husband has convinced me to ride everything here in Southern California, from here to Disneyland, Knott’s Berry Farm, and Magic Mountain.

Andy – You should let Russel know when you’re coming. He’ll play docent for a few rides.

Liz – Disneyland here in California started the entrance fee that covered all rides. I’m not sure what purpose it served though since the cost of entering skyrocketed.

Kathryn – If you like the wooden ones, the Giant Dipper is pretty nice.
