UPDATE, 11/22/10: According to the Washington Post article, Fairfax Police: Serial burglar nabbed, Montgomery County police have arrested the man suspected in the bold and extensive string of burglaries throughout Northern Virginia and Montgomery County.
Emails have been swirling around my community about a burglar who is entering homes and stealing cash. This burglar is tied to nearly 70 break-ins!! To date, the police are aware of two handguns that have been stolen. In the Wednesday September 29 edition fo the Fairfax County Times, the article, Nearly 70 Break-ins in Fairfax County tied to lone suspect, ran in the paper and provided us with more specific information. In most cases, purses have been recovered with only the cash (and not the credit cards) missing.
Fairfax County Police are reporting that the burglar enters homes mainly through 
unlocked or open doors and windows.He has also broken into vehicles that are either unlocked, or he has smashed vehicle windows, to access purses and briefcases in vehicles. While the majority of these cases have been in homes that were left unlocked, he has been known to enter a house, steal the car keys and break into the car.
Police are warning people who live in Clifton, Sully, Fair Oaks, McLean, Reston and West Springfield to make sure all doors and windows are locked and that purses and other valuables are stored away from doors and windows. Do not leave purses, briefcases or garage door openers visible in your car.
Because this burglar is averaging one break in daily, all Fairfax County residents should be on alert. He is very bold and has shown no signs of slowing down his pace.
The police held a community meeting last night at Waples Mill Elementary and will hold one tonight at Fairview Elementary School at 8:00 p.m. (5815 Ox Road in Fairfax Station).
