I am working with my buyers who are doing the green retrofitting of the Asheville home they boughta while back. They have run into a bit of a brick wall when dealing with bath/shower inserts for the bathroom they are redoing. They have been told when it comes to picking a green insert their only choices are ones made out of acrylic or fiberglass, both which will apparently off gas to some degree. Does anyone know of any other green alternatives in regards to these types of inserts.  They are really do a bang up job of getting this to be a green home. Thanks!

Hi Bill, I don't have any suggestions...but I thought I would leave a comment to bring it back to the top of the group.  :)  Hopefully someone will have an answer for you.

Thanks Stephanie. It is not your average type of question. Most folks don't give this a second thought.

The acrylic or fiberglass are quick, but have they thought about tile?  There are some backing materials that won't absorb moisture the way sheet rock will -- isn't is called greenboard?

Bill,

I do not know to much either. Hmmmm, I remember Mary Bigelow had a post with some very interesting fixtures not too long ago.  I would love to hear more about the green remodel.

Hi Bill, thought I would stop by again to see if you got some good ideas.  :)  I have been in some GREEN homes that have used Tile but they used a different adhesive that made it a little more green.

Hi Judy, Barbara, and Stephanie:

The couple thought about tile but did not want to worry about cleaning grout and sealing it. Anyone know of any grout with green features that needs no cleaning or can be sealed with a green product that is long lasting? I know that is asking alot, but what the heck, I didn't get to far with the bathtub inserts.

Hi Bill, I wish I did.  Sorry.  Grout can get messy, I understand.  I'll keep thinking.

Bill, I just talked to a green builder and he says that there is a Recycyled Glass Terrazo Tile that you can use.  If their concern is grout then there is an Epoxy Grout that is non-porous and various other Anti-Microbial products.  If they want to completely do away with grout then he recommended Granite slab or stone or something.  He seems to think that the Epoxy Grout would work though.  He is going to try and find a website for us to look at.  I'll post it..if I get it.  :)
