Turtle RocketSometimes if you have been around awhile and gone through enough motivational seminars you can't take the hooey anymore and just want to throw up if one more Tony Robbins type comes bouncing off the walls at a meeting room near you. But there is

The Secret To Lighting A Fire Under Your Own Butt.

I am talking self-motivation not motivating that Bozo next to you. That's their problem and they will only act on motivation if they want to anyway. If you need six pack abs, to lose weight, get that sales goal, run that marathon, attend all your kids soccer games, how do you do it?

The answer is NOT a pep talk from the wild and crazy motivational speaker, the audio CDs in your car, or EVEN the accountability partner, which all are GOOD ideas.

The SECRET to motivating yourself is it is WHAT YOU WANT TO DO FOR YOURSELF. Not looking good with your weight loss for your girlfriend or wife, not attending those soccer games so the kids think Dad is now part of the family again, not running that distance race so your work colleagues see you cross the finish line, NO, to get things done, IT HAS TO BE FOR YOU. Figure out what you want to accomplish for YOU alone, and you will have a much better chance of achieving it. Good luck!!

You are absolutely correct. Outside forces can only influence us to a point. The journey is long with lots of obstacles along the way. Sustaining and maintaining the level of motivation has to come from within us.

Thanks for instilling the fire within us.

Hi Gary, I think highly effective people go through a lot of matches lighting fires under their own butts!

Gary, I just motivated myself to do the 30 in 30 blog challenge and at the same time decided to do the South Beach diet - both worked off each other. But you're right, I did them for me, not for anybody else, and it worked! 30 blogs later and 10 pounds lighter :)

Wow, what a concept. When we take out buyers, we SEEK MOTIVATION. When we go on listing appointments, we SEEK MOTIVATION.

So when we want to do something for ourselves, we should SEEK MOTIVATION.

Thanks for the nudge....

Good post.  Self motivation is more effective and cheaper than the 6 CD series from Tony or whomever.  Shouldn't that turtle be lighting his own fuse?

Thanks for the good words.

I love Tony Robbins and most of the motivational speakers. Listening to them helps me focus, although I can see where someone would go overboard and get bored with it. You absolutely have to motivate yourself, in the end. But I like to listen to different speakers and get different perspectives. It helps my creativity.

Knowing the outcomes that are important to you.  How's that for a TR kind of quote.  But it is key to what you say.  And I did the TR firewalk in FW back in '96.

Gary,

Thanks for this great MOTIVATIONAL "peptalk"!  You're absolutely correct!  If it's something I want to do, I'm much more likely to do it than if I'm doing it for someone else.  Thanks for the reminder!
