It's amazing, last year in October during a meeting in Orlando, one of the DBPR representatives predicted the number of mold inspectors that will probably be licensed in Southwest Florida.
So far Collier County has three (3) people qualify as licensed Mold Assessors, Lee County has five (5) licensed Mold Assessors and Charlotte County has one (1).
It's been three months since Florida law required a mold assessor to be licensed by the DBPR (July 1, 2010). With more than a hundred people in our area offering mold testing, mold inspections and (mold) "air quality testing" I'm a little surprised. The inspectors will not be punished until 2011 but why would you recommend or promote an unlicensed mold assessor (inspector)?
State of Florida Licensed Mold Assessor are required to have extensive training and $ 1 million liability insurance with E&O for both preliminary and post remediation (cleanup) inspections / testing. We have carried $2 million for years, builders, developers require us to, but most "inspectors" don't have mold E&O or even qualify for it from what I've seen in the last 10 years.
This season should be interesting, at least from the professional mold assessors view.
- Will a home owner who has his home mislabeled as having a mold problem when in fact he does not "sue" the unlicensed mold inspector who performed the inspection?
- Will the professionals involved be liable for hiring or recommending an unlicensed mold assessor?
- The state will not punish the unlicensed mold assessor until next year but what will the home owner who loses the sale of his home because the unlicensed mold inspector do?

6. Do I currently need a license to perform mold-related services (assessment or remediation)?
A license will be required after July 1, 2010; however, Florida Statutes provide that unlicensed activity will not be enforced until July 2011.
No License qualifies for another license.
Florida Law effective: July 1, 2010 DBPR License required for:
Home Inspectors Mold Assessors (Inspectors) Mold Remediators
No Penalties for unlicensed Inspectors until 2011.
Why would you hire an inspector that does NOT qualify for a license now?
Home Inspector license does Not qualify as Mold Assessor license.
Contractors that promote themselves as a Home Inspector are required to be licensed as a Home Inspector.
Contractors that promote themselves as Mold Assessors or Mold Remediator MUST be licensed by DBPR to do so.
