It's Freezing in my office...

Why do people (men!) find it necessary to set the thermostat down to subzero temperatures?!

This has been an ongoing War and joke with myself and the man I work with.  I will turn the thermostat up and he will come behind me and turn it down.  I have a space heater at my feet, even in the summertime.  I bring a sweater to work with me everyday, although I could really use a thermal heated blanket!  It's hard to be productive when you are cold.

A couple of months ago my male co-worker brought in an article explaining why I am always freezing andsweaty man he was always hot.  The article contributed the temperature preferences of men and women to several factors:

  • Women are generally smaller and a man's large body mass will keep a man warmer.
  • Men usually wear more clothes (suit and tie), clothes that cover their necks and feet, thus keeping them warmer.  Women on the other hand in a dress or skirt with heels don't have that extra protection.
  • Body hair (I laughed at this one!)  Women shave their legs and men don't.  Those hairy legs, arms, back keep a man warmer than a woman.

The article suggested dual air conditioning for the office! What a great idea, I am all for it.  I want my own vent so I can set it at around 80 and be comfortable!!

I'm a guy and I don't really like the temperature to be too low. Don't blame us all! lol

Lacey:

Its better for you to suck it up and wear warmer clothes.

If you crank up the heat, you might have men stripping down to their boxers and exposing their hairy backs, hairy legs and fat bellies.  Not too appealing.

Bill -  ewww yeah, I didn't think of that...  ha!

One of my biggest benefits of working from home, alone, in my back bedroom office is that I can have the temperature at any level and I can change it on a whim by simply adjusting the vent overhead.  The only other who might complain is Bowtie the Cat, and she doesn't get a vote!

Lacey -- I had a conversation with a friend yesterday where she was so cold in her office because someone else was hot!   It is amazing how hard it is to keep the balance...

If you have doubts about men and hot clothing, take apart a man's tie. A cheap one has at least 7 layers. Try wearing that around your neck.

JIM - Heels aren't so much fun either, I think I'd like to try the tie thing for a week.

Colleen - I know I am not alone, when females walk in here they all say ohhh it's sooo cold!  I am losing the battle.

Well my battle is like yours but it's not the men in my office.  It's the ladies that are going through the change.  God help us, when a hot flash hits you would think we were in Alaska in the winter.  I not only freeze, but my poor sinuses think they are on an exercise in expansion.

Funny post, thanks

Lacey,

I find it hot in my office and the ladies say they are cold, so I guess it is true.

I bet you don't find yourself getting sleepy at your desk!  I have to agree about the tie, and I'm not even gonna touch the whole hot flash thing.

How nice would that be to have dual air conditioners.  My hubby and I always have this problem.

Lacey:  Maybe a part of the temperature thing... has to do with where you were born.  I am from Cleveland, Ohio.  I am used to the cold.  I like it cold, so I bought a very well-insulated new home with a 14 SEER A/C unit.  You may fall over just thinking about what I am going to say, but during the summer I keep the thermostat set at 64 degrees.  I have a 2100 sq ft home, and my highest electric bill this summer was $227.  How cold do I like it ?  Well... does seeing snow clouds forming in the far corner of my family room tell you anything ?  LOL.

Woah Karen, 64 degrees?? You must be out of your everlovin mind!  I am a southern girl (Texas!) and I am used to the hot temperatures. I am not happy unless you can fry an egg on the sidewalk.

I have a friend that I visited in Ohio this month.  We went to Put n Bay, Port Clinton and Cedar Point.   I could not believe how many of you Buckeyes were swimming and walking around in bathsuits when it was only in the 70's - high 60's.  I must of looked like an out-of-towner when we went to the pool at Put n Bay -- the girls were in bikinis, the guys were in swimtrunks and I was dressed in an oversized tourist sweatshirt (that I got at one of the gift shops because I was so cold), long jeans, tennis shoes and thick socks!

Desiree - I am so glad you are behind me on this one!  I need all the support I can get right now lol.

Christopher - Hang in there if you are out-girled, you might have to buy yourself a fan.

Stacy and Jackie - true. I don't fall asleep at my desk.  But sometimes I have to fight just to keep my frozen numb fingers from turning purple.

Julie - They do have dual air conditioners for the car.  I have also heard of beds that have some sort of dual temperature control.  Now we need to get someone to really market a dual a/c for the office!  If one of you makes one, I want to be the first test subject.

I am one that likes to be on the cool side and I think it is better that way since if you are cold you can wear a jacket, etc, whereas if it is hot that really $%^&$.

I'm with you, Lacey! It's a shame to be forced to use a heater in the summertime. My office is frozen year-round!

Ilyce, thanks, I agree!

Dawn, where is Fredericksburg?  Is it cold there?

Kathy, nope!  He hasn't seen it to my knowledge.  ;)

Lacey - It is in Virginia.  It gets cold in the winter, nothing like NY though.  I remember when we lived in Watertown, NY and there were days that were -20.  Not fun for a pregnant mommy when daddy was always deployed.

I am a Broker in Lawton OK, I have 10 female Realtors that work for me.  Everyday when I walk in it is so cold in my office I freeze, not to mention pay a $900 Elec. bill.  I know how you feel, but I'm not so sure its a Male Female thing.
