The scarecrow needs your help! Given the recession, many have lost their jobs,
even resorted to scarepiracy.
Fortunately, The Narberth Area Garden Club comes to the rescue with a make and take workshop Thursday, Oct. 7th 7:30 - 8:30pm Led by Joe Daniels, Master Gardener (see details below)
Keeping birds from a free lunch at the expense of humans has been the
millenium-old scarecrows' primary purpose.
Some wonder if the scare has gone out of them as they have been replaced by shimmer ribbons and noise-making devices. You be the judge in the photos below.
Whatever shape - it is important to keep the countryside going and scarecrows have had to take on second jobs (just look at some of these fashion statements), some aspiring to be lawyers, but that was considered TOO scary.
Known across the world by many names, this has led to confusion and led to scarecrow demonstrations.
In the UK, names include such as mommet, hodmehod, murmet and bwbach.
In Scotland they perhaps have the most inventive name for them - tattie bogle - which derives from Scottish Gaelic for the old man of the rocks.
No matter what, keeping up appearances has been important to the scarecrow whom you might refer to as mawkin, shuft, nuffara or bogeyman
Scarecrows have tried becoming rap artistis, flocked to festivals in Japan,
and some found times hard in countries where they were relegated to scarecrow relocation camps where scaretorture was rampant.
It is rumored however that Bono of U2 may release a charity single in support of them
Others have realised that a complete change of career path is not essential. You can still scare, without it having to be crows.
Scaring humans is perhaps the best way to ride the recession and come out of safely on the other side.
So visit your local orchard such as Northrbook, Barnard's and Linvilla and take a scarecrow to lunch!
