Update on my friend Liz Carter (AR Member who had double lung and liver transplant)

About a week and a half ago, my good friend Liz Carter had a double lung and liver transplant in the Houston area (St. Luke's Hospital).  Needless to say, this is a very invasive and lengthy surgical procedure, and the first few days seemed to be going better than doctors had anticipated.

I spoke a couple of days ago with Bill, Liz's husband, and he gave me some updated information.  As with most transplants of this type and scope, there was good news and less-than-good news at this stage.

Overall, the organs themselves are responding quite well so far, and the surgery took hours less to complete than they had budgeted.  After a couple of days, they took Liz off of the ventilator and she was awake sometimes, though not speaking yet.  He alluded to the fact that she was her typical feisty self, which was a positive sign.  However, they later ran some tests and determined that Liz had some stroke activity on both sides of her brain, and she was back on the ventilator.  Thankfully, they caught the stroke activity very quickly and this particular type of stroke is largely reversible.  Basically, it was a blessing that it happened while she was in the hospital, since they could treat her right away. They mentioned that there could be some residual effects (for example, one of her arms might not work perfectly, etc.).

They were relatlvely sure that the loss of oxygen to her brain was caused by a large mucus clot that she couldn't cough up herself.  Bill said that lung transplant patients can usually cough up stuff like this, but Liz was in so much pain because of her high tolerance for pain meds that she was unable to do it, so they had to do a bronchiotomy to remove it.

As you can see, there's a long road to recovery ahead, including the anti-rejection drugs, along with the "normal" healing process.

Please continue to pray for our friend.  I hope to have more updates in the upcoming week.

I read a post by Marchel Peterson today which has some additional, new information about the ventilator:

Liz Carter update - PLEASE KEEP HER IN YOUR PRAYERS!!

UPDATE FROM BILL, Liz's husband - 10-09-2010

She was given a voice box exam while I was there this evening, the vocal chords on the left side are not moving, her right one is doing a fair job compensating but her voice is weak and gravelly. The movement in her right leg and left arm are much improved. I'd say 80% of normal, however her right arm and left leg are still not functioning at more than 10%. This is really starting to bother her.

She has now been breathing, unassisted by O2 flow, for over a full day and O2 levels are well above average 95-97%, that brings a big smile to her face as well as mine. She still is on a feeding tube but hopefully this can be removed after swallow tests are done tomorrow. She has been under going physical therapy and has been sitting up for short periods of time in conjunction with leg exercises. If all goes well ,she maybe moving to the normal transplant floor in the next day or so. That will mark a big mile stone in getting out of the hospital and back home.

UPDATE FROM BILL (Liz's husband):

I spoke with Bill for about 15 minutes yesterday afternoon, and he said that Liz's new organs continue to function extremely well.  She started on solid food about a week ago, which is apparently a big positive step with liver transplants.  The concern with her vocal chords is now something that they think may have happened before the surgery, but it was just never caught until now.  The mobility in her limbs is improving "pretty much on a daily basis" and they had her up and walking around a little bit, too.  She hasn't needed any supplemental oxygen at all for quite some time now.  Obviously, all of this is very encouraging.

Bill mentioned that Liz loves to see people, so if you know Liz and want to visit her, she's at St. Luke's Hospital, just south of downtown Houston.  There's a chance that she will be going home sometime in the next week or two.

THANK YOU for your continued prayers.  This is nothing short of a miracle that she got the needed organs (lots of matching has to occur - tissue, blood type, size, etc.) and that she's doing this well so far.
